The mighty Colorado river makes for an awe-inspiring backdrop for my morning coffee.  Well needed after days spent horse riding and hiking escpially after being woken by the local black bear roaming the ranch.  My cabin is spacious, quiet and comfortable, the restaurant is situated in the main building which involves a leisurely stroll down the river which is particularly pleasant in the evening sun.  Despite the name Sorrel River Ranch isn't a typical ranch and the horse riding facilities and trails are on the basic end of the spectrum, the rides involve mostly walking on rather chunky horses which can only be described as walking arm chairs suited making them well suited to leisure riders.   However, the rides do make for a fantastic photo opportunity and a great way to take in the awesome scenery.  The hotel also runs complimentary guided hikes every morning which make for a great start to the day.  For the more daring there is an onsite adventure centre but be sure to book activities early as they sell out quickly in peak season.

Just to clarify as it often confuses and understandably so, Sorrel River Ranch isnt actually a ranch. Its a resort style hotel and they do have horses and ponies there and guests can definitely go out and ride, however, if youre looking for cowboys, lassoos and cookouts then this isnt quite the right place for you. However, if you would like a slightly luxurious home on the range feel in a stunning location, youve come to the right place. Sorrel River Ranch is set right on the banks of the mighty Colorado River, 17 miles along route 128 from Moab. So the one thing to immediately remember is the extra time needed to get here, even when you arrive in the buzzing town of Moab you still have another 30 minutes or so to drive before reaching your destination. Its worth it though, this twisting turning road winds alongside the Colorado river as it snakes through the gorges strewn with camp sites for the keen outdoor enthusiasts (mountain biking, climbing and rafting are huge here) and then opens out toward the end of your journey to display stunning rock sculptures lining the sky. Sorrel River Ranch has a healthy amount to land and a couple of minutes to reach the reception from the gate past the pastures, stables and petting zoo which is a firm favourite with younger guests. Im greeted enthusiastically by the bellman who asks me to follow his golf cart up to the building right at the end of the line of accommodations. Each building has around 6 rooms in them, some facing toward the pasture and others toward the river. Without a doubt, pay the extra and go for the river view, waking up to the gentle sound of the water and the red rock faces rising dramatically above it is a treat well worth indulging in. My room is spacious and rustic luxury. Theres a little kitchenette corner and wooden table and chairs, country style leather sofa and four poster bed built out of tree trunks it seems. The bathroom is roomy too with a dreamy claw foot tub that I wonder how long will take to fill, its that big! Outside the porch allows privacy from neighbours and comfy wooden Adirondack chairs for sitting out as the sun sets and the evening draws in. The main building houses the restaurant (which is just being refurbished), a pool and deck area and outside terrace. There is sometimes live music playing in the evenings but sadly not this evening, however, I am very lucky to be there on a Friday night where a local amateur astronomer sets up his telescope on the activities field once the darkness has fallen and points out some incredible night treasures. Its quite cloudy this evening, however, he has found Jupiter and we get a very clear view of it complete with two rings and all four moons, its pretty exciting. We take a look at the almost full moon and its possible to even see the craters on the top. The conversation slips into supernovas and galaxies far and beyond and my mind is a bit blown so I bid farewell and head back to my room. One thing they could do with here is some lighting though as I did rather fumble and trip my way back to my building in a slightly groping manor. Breakfast the next morning is lovely but pricey. This is one thing to mention, the dining here is upscale and so is the pricing. There is only the one restaurant on site so guests are a little restricted if they dont want to go out. However, the Red Cliffs Lodge just 3 miles along the road has more laid back dining at good price so it is worth booking a table for dinner there at least once. It gets busy as the restaurant looks right over the river. No meals are included at Sorrel River so everything else is a la carte. What they do include though is the petting zoo, a couple of great hikes, two of which are guided each day as well as camp fires with smores each evening, volleyball and tennis. Theres also yoga and there is also a small spa although I cant say its one of the most decadent I have seen or tranquil, perhaps save your indulgences for another more spa focussed hotel.

All in all its a nice place and they have the idea right, however, I do feel it lacks a little direction and the service can be hit and miss. I noticed a predominantly young staff and perhaps they have trouble keeping staff beyond a season or so which can mean the continuity of the service can waiver some what. If they had a great team in place I think this place could be spectacular, it has everything in place but something just lacks a little at the moment. Hopefully they will address this and it can rise to its full potential.
