Jorvik Viking Centre
Lake District & Northern England, United Kingdom
Standing on the site of one of the most famous and astonishing discoveries of modern archaeology, the Jorvik Viking Centre in York offers an outstanding chance to journey through reconstructed Viking-Age streets, as they would have been 1000 years ago.
Based on the evidence unearthed at a dig between 1976 and 1981, where archaeologists revealed the houses, workshops and backyards of the Viking-Age city of Jorvik as it stood nearly 1,000 years ago, Jorvik Viking Centre offers a unique opportunity to experience life over a millennium ago. Children in particular will be enthralled.
Take a ride to see the replica Viking streets, come face to face with a ‘real’ old-Norse-speaking Viking and see inside their houses and back yards, with the smell of home-cooked stew wafting out. You can even examine Viking bones to discover what they ate and how they died, but be sure to watch out for the four Viking ghosts!
