Itinerary

Day 1-3

Yangon

Starting in Yangon, you’ll have two nights in the city to explore all of the highlights. Your private guide will be hand-picked and will know how to engage with children, so no doubt they will be given their Burmese names (made up by which exact day of the week they were born) and told more of what Myanmar life is all about, rather than a list of dates that makes them feel like they are back at school. On your first evening in the city head straight to the Shwedagon Pagoda for sunset. As one of the more revered sites in Myanmar, it is a great place to dive in as people from around the country come to pay homage. In the evening if you are not too tired we can include a cool tour taking you around Yangon on trishaw stopping in at some of Yangon’s more trendy Burmese restaurants.

The following day, instead of concentrating on museums, we have included visits to a number of social enterprises so that you can experience real life in Myanmar. During the day you’ll visit workshops making fashion accessories, jewellery, a Shiatsu centre and art gallery which all work to support local communities and those with disabilities. We have also included a visit to Chinatown where artisans are using traditional methods of creating jewellery showcasing skills that have nearly been lost in modern day. From here you can continue on to a traditional puppet show, an important tradition in Myanmar’s heritage.

Accommodation: Belmond Governor's Residence ( 2 nights )
Day 3-4

Kalaw

Next you will take a short flight to Heho and drive to Kalaw on a scenic drive of just over an hour and have the afternoon to stroll around this charming little town full of colonial style houses. The following day we have included a visit to Green Hill Elephant Camp, providing a home for rescued old working elephants who now spend their retirements being fed and bathed by visitors to the camp. Feed them tamarind balls packed with their daily vitamins and large chunks of bamboo. You'll then be able to take one of them to the river to enjoy his or her daily wash and you are more than welcome to help. The local mahouts say this is akin to the elephants having a spa treatment and they absolutely love it. Finally walk back to the camp, plant a tree as part of the area's reforestation programme and have an amazing Burmese lunch.

Accommodation: Dream Mountain Resort ( 1 night )
Day 4-6

Inle Lake

On departure from the Green Hill Elephant camp, you’ll drive directly to Inle Lake and from the water’s edge take a longtail boat to your hotel, where you will be spending your next two nights. The following morning you’ll jump in your longtail boat and be whisked away to the village of Ywama where you can kayak through the maze of canals and waterways that form the ‘streets’ of the village. This is a fantastic way to experience local life on the lake. As you transfer by private boat to and from your hotel you are likely to spot Intha fishermen who row standing up with one leg wrapped around a single oar, floating gardens and local communities.

Accommodation: Sanctum Inle Resort ( 2 nights )
Day 6-8

Mandalay

From Inle Lake you will drive back Heho airport in order to take your connecting flight to Mandalay. On arrival you’ll be able to explore this lovely city and we have included visits to Mahamuni Pagoda which is home to one of the country’s most revered Buddha image and Kuthodaw Pagoda, whose 729 marble stone slabs of Buddhist scriptures have earned it the title being home to the ‘World’s Biggest Book’.  From here, you will head to Mandalay Hill for a birds eye view of the city below.

The following morning you will set off on a bike tour through the eastern outskirts of the city, surrounded with small villages and rice paddy fields. During the trip you’ll make several stops into local villages and Yankin Hill, a popular pilgrimage spot for the locals. In the afternoon, returning to Mandalay you’ll have the afternoon at leisure to relax by the pool.

Accommodation: The Hotel by the Red Canal ( 2 nights )
Day 8-11

Ngapali Beach

For your final stop on the trip you will take another short internal flight, this time from Bagan to Thandwe and from here drive to Ngapali Beach for some well-deserved beach time.  We will include a boat trip with local fishermen taking in some snorkelling. Fly home with countless memories and no doubt very happy children eager to hear about where their next adventure will be.

Accommodation: Sandoway Resort ( 3 nights )
