A Day in the Life of the Inthar

Inle Lake, Burma

On this half-day tour get to know the Inthar, the native residents of Inle Lake. Explore their stilted villages, encounter leg-rowing fishermen, pick vegetables at floating farms and even help to prepare an Inthar meal.

This tour means immersion in local Intha ethnic culture. You’ll cruise the Lake’s waters, meeting Intha fishermen and witnessing their incredible and unique ‘leg rowing’ technique. This way of fishing is unique to the region and takes years to master. If you feel brave, you can join the fishermen and try to net your own catch for lunch. You’ll also come very close to the highly nutritious floating gardens offering the chance to collect fresh herbs and vegetables and to understand how the farm beds are created using weeds, mud and bamboo poles. All manner of things grow, including tomatoes and aubergines. At a local Inthar home, hosts stand ready to welcome you and to teach you how to cook Inthar favourites like fish steamed in banana leaf, tomato salad and stuffed potato rice balls. Joining them to eat is an unforgettable experience.
