It’s not possible to see Awaroa Lodge from the shore – it’s tucked into the trees, and all you can see of it is the curved wooden walkway from one end of the beach. Arriving here on the beach and walking along the powder-soft sand and into the trees it feels as though you could be a million miles from civilization, and this is all part of the experience here.
The lodge itself is a simple affair, with twenty six rooms catering to travelers wanting to explore more of Abel Tasman than simply on a daytrip. It is not particularly luxurious, although the superior rooms are modern and well appointed, but don’t expect a five star, exclusive experience. Awaroa Lodge is very down to earth and family-friendly and is one of only a small few options of accommodation within the park itself. There are six family rooms which sleep up to six.
The main activities are kayaking and hiking along the Abel Tasman trail which runs up and down the coast, using the sea shuttles to avoid backtracking. There is also a small marsh for a shorter stroll near the lodge, and the Sky Track which offers some lovely ocean views from its elevated position.
Food is home-cooked and locally sourced, with delicious seafood dishes and beautiful fresh flavors.
Dining is either in the wooden floored dining room or in the bright, airy conservatory. There’s a lounge with armchairs, a cosy library with a roaring fire in the cooler months, and an outdoor pizza oven for lunches in the summer months. Outside visitors and walkers on daytrips often stop by for lunch, as this is one of the only restaurants in the region.
Location & Directions

When to go
The climate in New Zealand is incredibly pleasant, with warm and balmy summers and cold crisp winter months with wonderful clear, blue skies. The warmer high-season months of November to April are perfect for outdoor exploration. The colder months of June to August are the best time to ski.
Both North and South Islands are drier on the east coast, rather than on the west, where mountain ranges act as a trap for the moisture-rich winds from the Tasman Sea. It is also worth remembering that it is usually a few degrees cooler on the South Island than the North Island and as New Zealand has a maritime climate, the weather can change rapidly.
