Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

For a small country, Jordan has an extraordinary range of climates. The best time to visit climate-wise is in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when the daytime temperatures aren't too extreme. April is probably the best month, when temperatures are warm and wildflowers are in bloom. March can be cold and rainy in the north but is balmy by the Gulf of Aqaba and the Dead Sea.

The Petra Marriott is located above Wadi Mousa; the town on the edge of the famous Petra site. Like many hotels in Jordan, the Petra Marriott is a little dated, however it does provide a perfectly comfortable base for adventures into the Rose-Red City.

The Petra Marriott enjoys an elevated location above the town, offering wonderful panoramic views towards Petra and the surrounding mountains. The hotel has 100 rooms, which are international in style and feature en-suite bathrooms and air-conditioning.

There are three restaurants to choose from, with menus featuring Mediterranean and Arabic Cuisine, and the Aretas Bar & Lounge offers refreshing drinks and a selection of snacks. The hotel has a pleasant outdoor pool, perfect for a relaxing dip after spending the day exploring Petra, and there are also Turkish Baths, where it is possible to enjoy a sauna, body scrubs and massages.

During the summer months, the hotel also has the Al Matal Bedouin Tent, which offers an authentic Arabian dining experience.

The main purpose of a stay at the Petra Marriott is of course to visit the incredible Petra site, which is a short drive away. Little Petra is also nearby, and it is possible to try your hand at Arabic cooking at Petra Kitchen.

  • Jeep Ride in Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum offers stunning vistas, wide open spaces and fascinating natural rock structures. You will have a one-hour jeep ride here to visit the Khazali Canyon, the rock bridges, Lawrence of Arabia's house and ancient Nabataean inscriptions.

  • Kerak Castle

Built in 1161 by the Crusaders, Kerak is a perfect example of mediaeval castle design. The castle is a dark maze of stone-vaulted halls and passageways. Its most famous occupant was Reynald de Chatillon, who had a reputation for treachery and brutality.

  • Petra by Night

Petra by Night occurs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8.30pm. You enter the Siq, and the canyon which leads to the Treasury.

  • Petra Kitchen

Short taster course into the delights of Jordanian cooking.

  • Showbak Castle

Showbak is an isolated Crusader castle, located around an hour north of Petra. Whilst it is more dilapidated than other castles such as Kerak, the setting is very dramatic; perched on a hillside and offering extensive views of the surrounding area.

  • Tour of Petra with a Local Guide

A two-hour tour of Petra with a private local guide which will include a walk through the Siq before moving to the Treasury (El Khazneh), the intricately carved Royal Tombs, Street of the Facades and finishing at Qasr al Bint.

  • Trek into Petra

For your first day in Petra, you will trek in via the back route with a private local guide. Travelling this route allows you to beat the crowds, arriving at the famous Monastery whilst most visitors are still at the start of the site.
