Average time to visit
The most popular time to visit the island for most visitors is in the summer, when the beaches offer healthy waves and the days are long. The season is generally from Memorial Day till Labour Day weekend. There are occasional rainy days even in the summer, but most days are sunny. There may be a morning or late evening fog that can be almost surreal as it envelops the town. The ocean breezes keep temperatures mild with rarely a blistering heat or major snowstorm in the winter.
Many visitors also enjoy the autumn months the most as September offers cooler temps and far less crowds. There is usually an "Indian summer" in October with a few beach days as well. The fall also offers lower rates, easier reservations, and virtually kid-free. The off-season makes for a good getaway, too, as many of the restaurants and shops stay open till the vacations.
With the waters of picturesque Nantucket Harbor practically lapping at the Cottages and Lofts, this is the ideal vacation cottage from which to explore sophisticated Nantucket Island with its glorious beaches, charming villages and unspoiled landscapes.
Cottages and Lofts are found on Nantucket Island which is all your childhood fantasy vacations rolled into one. With sweeping beaches, gingerbread cottages, days spent messing about on boats, magnificent harbors and rugged beauty, Nantucket, which only measures 3 miles by 14 miles, is quintessential wholesome Cape Cod.
Perched right on picturesque Nantucket Harbor amid the yachts are the Cottages and Lofts, a collection of 29 weathered-shingle vacation cottages. The sounds of seagulls, slapping halyards, and occasional horns from passing ferries make you feel like you’re bobbing alone on a privately moored yacht, only with more space and luxuries to hand!
The accommodation ranges from studios to one, two and three bedroom cottages or lofts, making them ideal for couples or families. The attractive modern décor nods to the nautical: white walls, navy-blue rugs, and polished-pine floors and furniture. They have spacious homely sitting rooms, well equipped kitchenettes, and slate-floored bathrooms, all adding to the beach cottage vibe. All have water views and some have picture windows plus a little garden terrace or deck from which to take in the morning sun and watch boats hoisting their sails for the day.
While Cottages and Lofts doesn’t have its own restaurant there is plenty of choice within walking distance and at its sister properties, the White Elephant and Wauwinet. There is a concierge on hand to help organize activities, from bike rental to picnics, restaurant reservations or booking spa treatments, to a day’s fishing or sailing and fun family activities.
Nantucket is all about the beach and Cottages and Lofts can provide everything you need for the perfect day out: from coolers and picnics, to beach chairs, umbrellas and towels or boogie boards. In addition there’s no need to worry about transportation with their complimentary beach shuttle service.
Cottages and Lofts feature 24 Nantucket Waterfront Cottages and five Deluxe Lofts. You can choose from one, two or three bedroom. The cottages enjoy sweeping views of Nantucket Harbor and have stylish but casual furnishings to create a homely feel. The lofts are located directly on Straight Wharf, and similar to the cottages are decorated with a very homely and cosy feel. Most of the accommodation comes with a kitchen, living area and deck.
The Cottages and Lofts are a good choice of accommodation if your are traveling with children. The two-bedroom and three-bedroom cottages and lofts are ideal for families. Children will love their time in Nantucket as there is plenty to discover and do. The resort specializes in kids fishing; they will provide children sized rods, have designated fishing spots for children and arrange competitions.
Cottages and Lofts does not have its own restaurant but Scott Dunn and the resort will be able to recommend some delicious options nearby.
The resort has some bicycles that guests can borrow on a first-come first-serve basis, in-room massages can be arranged and there is a beach shuttle bus. The hotel can provide beach chairs, umbrellas, cool box and even beach toys.
The Cottages and Lofts are ideally positioned to make the most of what Nantucket has to offer. There are more than 80 miles of un-crowded, pristine sandy beaches on Nantucket Island. Simply enjoy long walks, combing for seashells and other treasures, ask the hotel to pack you up a picnic or try your hand at body surfing, windsurfing or kayaking.
Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy endless outdoor activities like fishing, boating, biking, and exploring nature. Be sure to take a 4x4 trip to Great Point and visit the wildlife Center and bird refuge. Go with a knowledgeable local guide or if you prefer to explore on your own the hotel will organize your jeep, fishing poles and a hearty packed lunch. Or if you prefer to explore on the water, why not own your own yacht for the day and tour Nantucket harbor and sound or cruise to Martha's Vineyard. Between June and October you might be lucky enough to spot whales in Nantucket's Great South Channel.
If no trip is complete without some shopping, Nantucket is filled with wonderful antique and collectable shops and boutiques. Local museums are also a pleasure to explore.
Go surfing at Nantucket Island Surf School, the island's premier surf school offering lessons from Cisco Beach to all ages and abilities. All equipment is provided, including boards and wetsuits. Just show up in your costume and get ready for some fun!
