Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

The ski season in the United States is longer than that in Europe. Most resorts open sometime in November, with Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday in that month) being a common opening time, and stay open until mid to late April. The Rocky Mountains in Colorado and Wyoming have the highest peaks and due to the semi-arid climate, have abundant snowfall with some great powder. The exceptionally high altitude means December through to February can be extremely cold, with temperatures sometimes reaching as low as -12C, although the skiing conditions remain very good. Warmer temperatures in the Spring mean more variable skiing conditions and softer, forgiving snow.

Lucy Hunt (Staff)

The St. Regis in Aspen can best be described as an olde-worlde property and full of elegance and glamour. Think chandeliers, log fires and pianos. The hotel is tucked away just off the main high street, next to the ice skating rink, so is in a quieter location but still with easy access to the lifts and Aspens main amenities, both about a 5-minute walk from the hotel door.

The St Regis Aspen really is a fantastic hotel in simply one of the best locations in town - it's pretty hard to miss with a skating rink right outside it. Recently refurbished, the style really feels like a Hollywood movie from the Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe era - classic and glamorous. Make sure you have a dip in the outdoor pools and hot tubs in afternoon so you can watch the skiers tackling the descent down Ajax Mountain. Whether you are a guest here or not, dinner at the Food & Wine Club is truly an experience with some of America's top chefs often visiting.
