Rajasthan is known as the desert state. It is largely hot and dry throughout the year, making it a great destination to get away during cold winter months.
Summer in Rajasthan extends from April to June. It’s the hottest season so not ideal for travel, although early April is a good time to get great value for money if you don’t mind the heat. In western Rajasthan temperatures may soar, particularly in May and June, so we'd suggest avoiding Jaisalmer and the Thar Desert at this time.
The monsoon season usually runs from July to September. The temperature drops slightly, and humidity increases. During this period 90% of the rain Rajasthan occurs, although in reality Rajasthan never receives much rainfall. Lakes and rivers will be higher and there's more colour to the landscape.
October to March is the best time to travel to Rajasthan. Expect warm and sunny weather, perfect for exploring and relaxing. Please note that hotels are at their busiest over the Christmas and New Year period. December and January can have very cool mornings and evening and we suggest taking some warm clothing. Whilst temperatures in the desert areas are always hot in the daytime, they become some of the coolest areas of the state once the sun goes down. It’s also normal to expect some fog in the major cities of northern Rajasthan in December and January.

Fateh Garh is a wonderfully understated hotel with stunning views over the surrounding countryside, in the Aravalli Hills just outside the beautiful city of Udaipur. It offers good value as a rural option and is a great base from which to explore Udaipur.
This fantastic little heritage hotel is located outside of Udaipur, set up in the surrounding Aravalli Hills, with stunning views of Udaipur in the distance, the nearby lakes, as well as the countryside.
Guests staying at Fateh Garh really get the best of both worlds, because the hotel is a wonderful country retreat yet it is just a 20-minute drive to the centre of Udaipur.
The property was relocated stone by stone, pillar by pillar, from a heritage structure, a process of heritage renaissance. It therefore mixes the rich architectural heritage with modern facilities in an understated style and there are traditional values overseen by the host family who still reside at Fateh Garh.
With 48 spacious rooms, facing out in all directions from the hotel, Fateh Garh retains an intimate atmosphere. Rooms are tastefully decorated combining a modern feel with characterful furniture and little touches such as hand-painted room numbers.
There are three dining options at Fateh Garh: Baradari which has 270° views and is open for lunch and dinner, Prasadam which is on the poolside terrace, and a number of intimate dining spaces dotted around for destination dining. Mewari cuisine, indigenous to the area, is on offer but the chef will also chat to guests so that dining is tailored to individual tastes. Also on offer is the hotel's unique 'Hi-tea with Show Around', from 3pm, when you can really appreciate the Herculean task that was carried out to move the building from one location to another.
Fateh Garh boasts a spa measuring 2,500sqft, with stunning views from the massage rooms where a range of massages are on offer, a steam bath, a Jacuzzi, a beauty salon and a gymnasium. The hotel also has a range of beautiful vintage cars, as well as Marwari horses in the stables that can be admired.
Beyond the hotel, guests can enjoy visits to the beautiful city of Udaipur, which boasts fantastic shopping opportunities, a number of romantic restaurants, and a series of palaces including the stunning city palace which will delight visitors looking to learn more about Rajasthani culture.
Fateh Garh has 48 rooms and suites which feel spacious and airy. There are 38 Renaissance Rooms which measure 350sqft, seven Heritage Chambers, and three Fateh Garh Suites which measure 500sqft.
Children are welcome at Fateh Garh but there are no specific childcare facilities for them.
50% of the hotel's staff are employed from the surrounding area, while the other 50% are from a hotel background. This is part of Fateh Garh's efforts to contribute to the local area, and to be sustainable. Guests shouldn't expect 5* luxury and service, but a friendly atmosphere, and a feel for the heritage and culture of the Mewar region.
Fateh Garh has two main dining options: Baradari which is next to the swimming pool with 270° views of the surrounding area, which is open for lunch & dinner and serves Indian & local Rajasthani cuisine; while Prasadam is within the main hotel building. There are plenty of intimate dining spaces for couples dotted around the hotel for special dinners.
Guests can enjoy the surrounding countryside and take a jeep safari through local villages; head into Udaipur to visit the palaces, go shopping and have a boat ride on Lake Pichola; and enjoy the spa, gym and pool.

Fateh Garh is located a little further away from the city but offers the most incredible views of Udaipur and its lakes. Located high up in the hills, this is a beautiful, bright and airy property with a great mixture of modern design and antique furnishings. It's a great option for those wanting some peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the city, or those who want to get involved with lots of outdoor activities. The property has two pools, one of which is an infinity pool with incredible views across the city and lake.

I really liked the feel of this hotel. It was designed using pillars, doors, and other fun additions like cannons, taken from an old derelict castle nearby and rebuilt on a hill overlooking Udaipur with extraordinary views. The rooms are decorated within the remit of an old castle. The whole place is simple, without fuss and beautiful. It is a great opportunity to get a different perspective of the city.
