To start planning your holiday to Turtle Inn

Movie Director Francis Ford Coppola’s Turtle Inn is a rustic Indonesian style beach retreat set back from a narrow stretch of pearly white sands gently lapped by the Caribbean Sea on Belize’s southern coast, outside the sleepy Creole village of Placencia.

Turtle Inn is an oceanfront hideaway with 25 individual thatched beach huts in the Stann Creek district of Belize. Charming cottages and villas of bleached thatch and native wood mingle with palm trees and are naturally cooled by the ever-present sea breezes. Each of the accommodations has beautiful artisan-crafted furnishings and just beyond the private deck white Caribbean sands dissolve into a clear water world of unspoilt coral reefs and exotic fish.

Turtle Inn offers three distinct restaurants where one can savour mouthwatering seafood dishes, home grown fruits and vegetables or pizza from their authentic wood-burning stove. The Turtle Inn also features the Sunset Spa, an open-air Balinese Rice House decorated with painted murals inspired by ancient art and boasts stunning views of the Placencia Lagoon. The spa specialises in Thai massage and only uses locally-sourced organic ingredients for its treatments. In addition, two swimming pools offer a choice of freshwater and saltwater bathing.

Experience the world’s best salt water fly-fishing or snorkel in miles of untouched barrier reef. Visit the world’s only jaguar reserve or cruise up the Monkey River and observe tropical birds, iguanas, manatees, crocodiles and howler monkeys.

I really liked the rooms at Turtle Inn, they are spacious and the location of the seafront cottages is fantastic, with the doors opening straight on to the sand. There are complimentary kayaks, paddle boards and snorkelling equipment for guests to borrow, ensuring there is plenty to do. The beach at Turtle Inn is long but quite narrow, and there is some sea grass close to the shore. There are also two swimming pools if you don't fancy a dip in the sea!

Lovely cabana on the beach, I am glad we paid the extra for this, some of the gardenview cabanas looked dark and a bit close to the road.

Bar /hotel staff generally excellent.

Food, good sometimes, slightly erratic in terms of quality in the main restaurant.

Great wildlife and birds on the property.

Beach, rather depressingly had quite significant amounts of plastic ( including syringes) washing up onto the sand. A real worry for the local enviroment down in Placencia.

There is a lot of development and draining of the local mangrove swamps going on around the hotel, I fear this will ruin the local eco -systems and the village within 5 years or so.

Although many people comment on the fact that the decor is Balinese and doesn't really fit into a typically Belizean experience, I found on the contrary that it works really well. Turtle Inn is a great place to finish up on the beach, and has access to some of the best diving in the country, although you need to travel out by boat 30 minutes or more to reach these dive spots. The food here was truly excellent, and one of the nicest things about Turtle Inn is that the hotel will give you a cycle to head into Placencia a mile or so away, which is a wonderfully ramshackle Garifuna town with a couple of fun bars and restaurants, great for whiling away the afternoon hours.
