Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Rwanda can be visited at any time of year. There are two annual rainy seasons: the big rains which last from mid-February to the beginning of June, and the small rains from mid-September to mid-December. Rainfall, especially over the mountains, is heavy during these two periods, particularly from March to May. The long dry season, June to September, is the best time for tracking gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park and for hiking in Nyungwe Forest Reserve.

This six day Rwandan adventure combines the classical African safari experience with the opportunity to visit the majestic mountain gorillas of the Virunga Massive, all within Rwanda. Head to the open savannahs and damp swamps of Akagera National Park in search of lions and the endangered black rhino before heading to the misty forests of Volcanoes National Park in search the endangered great apes.

  1. Fly into Kigali

  2. Days 1-4: Virungas and northern Rwanda

Arrive into Kigali International Airport where your Rwandan sojourn will begin. You will drive through bustling Rwandan towns and a stunning patchwork of agricultural land on route to Akagera National Park. This 100,000 hectare National Park has been part of a huge conservation focus and is now host to a population of lion, elephant and black rhino. Your three night stay will be based on a vast lake that is known for large numbers of hippos and crocodiles. Explore the rolling open plains, woodlands and the swamps on 4x4 game drives, go in search of the more elusive nocturnal species on night drives, enjoy boat cruises on the lake and even try your hand at fishing and catch a bite.

    Accommodation: Magashi Camp (3 nights)

  3. Days 4-7: Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Today you will make your way up into the volcanic mountain range of Volcanoes National Park. Enjoy a three night stay based on the very edge of this dense forest looking out over an impressive landscape of magnificent volcanoes and lush green vegetation. During your stay you will gain an insight into the vibrant culture of Rwanda and the hospitality of these generous people. A trip to Rwanda would not be complete without a visit to the great apes that call this home. Reminiscent of the days of classic explorers, you will hack your way through thick foliage, pushing aside tall prehistoric looking ferns until you find the gorilla family. Here you will have one spell binding hour in their presence, a truly memorable experience for every wildlife enthusiast.

    Accommodation: Bisate Lodge (3 nights)
