Explore the Shwezigon Pagoda, built the early 11th century; Wetkyi-In Gubyaukgyi, a cave temple with exquisite murals and the Ananda, an architectural masterpiece with standing Buddha images whose facial expressions change depending on where you view them. The breathtaking view of the brick temples, against the backdrop of a vast river plain is unforgettable. Just outside Bagan lies Mount Popa, an extinct volcano and legendary home of the Nats (spirits in Burmese). Stop en route at a local toddy palm farmer’s hut and see how they collect and make the delicious palm sugar and drink, as well as at the foot of Mt Popa where a bustling local market offers a glimpse of the local daily life.
