The city of Essaouira is perched on the western coast of Morocco and has been inhabited since the 5th century BC, although the city as we know it originated in the 18th century. The city is a picturesque scene – blue shutters stand out against whitewashed buildings, and fishing boats of the same colour bob in the harbour. Outside Essaouira, the Atlantic coastline is a treasure trove of fortresses and towns established under Portuguese rule, while Oualidia makes for the ideal peaceful Moroccan retreat.
