Hotel Bo, located a short stroll down colonial streets from the pulsing bohemian heart of Chiapas's San Cristobal de las Casas, is a striking counterpoint to the town’s cobbled streets, balconied buildings and buzzing plazas.
The hotel’s 22 colorful rooms and suites have been designed sensitively in ways that fuse the four elements and incorporate emblems and design motifs of the ancient Maya heritage, and in particular drawing on the rich textile traditions of the surrounding area.
The design is apparent when you enter the open-plan glass lobby, and this extends to the traditional Andalusian interior courtyard, the use of warm wood in the architecture, the beautiful decking, and the earth tones and textures of the walls.
Head chef Ricardo Muñoz Zurita presides over the hotel’s restaurant LUM, which serves up a tantalising array of traditional Mexican dishes.
Hotel Bo makes a wonderful base from which to discover the remarkable surrounding villages of Chiapas with their rich traditions of weaving and music, and slots perfectly into the classic route to Palenque.
There are 22 suites, of which 17 are Deluxe Suites. The superior suites come with butler service, and the Iti Suite has a Jacuzzi.
Italian Etro amenities for rooms and suites, 24-hour concierge service, butler service in suites, 24-hour room service, in-room spa treatments, board games, a selection of books in the library, laundry, dry cleaning and ironing, business center, fitness center, safes, iPod dock.
Trips to the surrounding villages can easily be organized, and Palenque and other Maya sites such as Bonampak and Yaxchilan are within striking range. When to go
Chiapas and the surrounding highlands have a temperate climate, and daytime temperatures generally remain warm all year round. Nights can be pleasantly cool in summer (June-October), but in the winter you’ll be glad there are blankets and fires in the rooms. Nestling in front of an open log fire can be very romantic - just bear in mind the nightly drop in temperature when you book your trip. The rainy season lasts from June to September.
