The Saxon is a stunning oasis in the exclusive Sandhurst district of Johannesburg. The hotel is nestled within 10 acres of mature gardens so it's lovely to be able to stretch your legs and wander round the garden which is dotted with interesting modern sculptures. There is also an extensive spa which offers a range of treatments from massages to sound therapy and detoxifying body wraps.
The rooms are large, incredibly comfortable with large ensuite bathrooms and possibly the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in! All of the rooms have a small balcony or terrace, perfect for a coffee in the morning sun. The Saxon is ideal if you have a slightly longer layover in Johannesburg so that you can relax and enjoy the lovely surroundings.
Its hard to write about a single spot in South Africa without Nelson Mandelas name cropping up. But it was here that he completed his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom. How otherworldly it must have seemed at the time the sweeping staircases, the fields of marble, the way sun spreads through the property like butter on a piece of toast. You may think you only want to stop for one night on the way through to safari thrills, but the Saxon will pin you down in its amber loveliness. There are the new villas, connected to the main hotel via a kind of Las Vegas-style walkway. If you want super-space, if you want to play chess with elephants, stay in one of these. The staff are pretty much the best in Africa. They have spunk and initiative and are full of energy. Dont, whatever happens, miss the spa and falling asleep in its famous bed of gongs crikey, its beautiful. And suck up the walls loaded with African baskets in the atrium its so big that one guest asked, just to make a point, if he could have an indoor cricket match and, bearing in mind this is a place of astonishing stories, the hotel happily obliged.

Arriving at the Saxon you really do feel as if you have arrived. Located in a leafy and very wealthy suburb of Johannesburg it is still the place to push the boat out. The entrance lobby is incredibly grand with a sweeping staircase but retains an African vibe with an enormous ostrich egg chandelier and generous strewing of zebra skin rugs. The rooms are no less opulent. I had a quick peak inside the restaurant before dinner where incredibly intricate chocolate pudding designs were already on display for enjoyment later that evening. The food and service here were seemless and I can highly recommend this for couples of all ages wanting to celebrate an anniversary or just give themselves a special treat.
