Average time to visit
The best time to visit Windhoek is between May and September, when it's cool and dry. Summer (November to March) is hot with heavy rains that sometimes make the gravel roads to the Namib completely impassable.
December and January see the main school vacations: much of the populace heads to the coast, so if you visit during this time you may find some shops and restaurants closed.

Hotel Heinitzburg is a restored castle on a hill, overlooking Windhoek, central Namibia. Originally commissioned in 1914, the castle has been transformed into an elegant hotel with 16 en-suite bedrooms, gourmet restaurant and great views over the city.
In 1914 Count von Schwenn Commissioned Heinitzburg for his fiancée Margarethe von Heinitz. However the castle has since been refurbished by the Raith family who own and care for the castle and have created a refined place to relax and explore Windhoek and the surrounding area.
The hotel is relatively small and so retains an intimate ambience with outdoor space to relax in and savour views of the city below and surrounding mountains. Hotel Heinitzburg's bedrooms are built around a vibrant garden with fountains and statues and a pool at one side which is heated in the winter. There is also a garden terrace which has great views across Windhoek, perfect for food and drink throughout the day and an evening drink or two as the sun goes down and the lights of the city appear.
One of the highlights of staying in Hotel Heinitzburg is eating a Leo's at the castle, a gourmet restaurant with views of the capital and a choice of local and international cuisine. Below the restaurant is the Felsenkeller, a large wine cellar built into the mountain rock foundations and filled with a great range of South African and European wines guests can choose to accompany their dinner.
Each of the hotel's 16 rooms is furnished differently but each are spacious and well designed with en-suites and elegant touches, there is even a honeymoon suite in one of the castle's turrets for a true fairytale touch.
There are 16 spacious en-suite rooms at Hotel Heinitzburg, each individual in their decor but all well-appointed with air-conditioning, safe, mini bar and flat screen TV. "Superior" Deluxe rooms have baths with integrated showers whereas the Deluxe rooms all have walk-in showers.
There is an optional baby sitting service at the hotel.
Hotel Heinitzburg has a relaxing private garden, swimming pool (heated in winter) and a terrace with wonderful views over the city and the surrounding landscape. Leo's at the castle is the hotel's gourmet restaurant serving a variety of dishes from local to a la cart. The wine cellar at the hotel is also home to the largest collection of South African vintages in Namibia.
From the hotel it is easy to explore the city of Windhoek, its historical buildings dating back to the colonial era and surrounding attractions such as Khomas Hochland, Daan Viljoen Game Park, The Liebig House or the Von Francois Fort. From the hotel guests can also go on day trips to play golf, horse rise and view game. Guests can also request in-room massages for true relaxation.
