Best time to visit
Good time to visit
Average time to visit
Rajasthan is known as the desert state. It is largely hot and dry throughout the year, making it a great destination to get away from European winters.
Summer in Rajasthan extends from April to June. It is the hottest season, with temperatures ranging from 32°C to 45°C, so not ideal for travel, although early April is a good time to get cheaper rates if you don't mind the temperature in the high 30°Cs. In western Rajasthan the temperature may reach at high as 45°C, particularly in May and June so we'd suggest avoiding Jaisalmer and the Thar Desert at this time. The second season - technically the "Monsoon" (although in reality Rajasthan never receives much rainfall) extends from July to September. The temperature drops slightly, and humidity increases. 90% of the rain Rajasthan can expect occurs during this period. Lakes and rivers will be higher from mountain run-off and flowers and grasses come to life, bringing added colour to the landscape. The Post-monsoon period is from October to November. The average maximum temperature is 33°C to 38°C, and the minimum is between 18°C and 20°C. The official "season" for hotels in Rajasthan starts in October. It’s a great time to travel - warm and sunny during and perfect for exploring and relaxing. The fourth season is "winter", and runs from December to March. With day time temperatures still in the high 20°Cs during the day this a very popular time to travel. Hotels are at the their busiest over the Christmas and new year period. Be aware though that December and January can have very cool mornings and evening and we suggest taking some warm clothing. Whilst temperatures in the desert areas are always hot in the daytime, they become some of the coolest areas of the state once the sun goes down. It’s also fairly standard to expect some fog in the major cities of northern Rajasthan and Delhi in December and January.

Spend the afternoon freshening up and begin preparing for your Indian adventure.

The next morning your friendly driver and guide will whisk you down the side streets of this bustling city to an array of markets and stalls where you can sample delicious flatbreads, samosas and local sweet treats. India is passionate about its food, so this is a great introduction to some of the vibrant smells, spices and dishes on offer. You can end your tour with High Tea at Dharampura Haveli; sit back and enjoy the majesty of the building while taking in the history, dating back to the late Mughal period.

We recommend asking Claridges to pack you a picnic breakfast for the train which you can enjoy as you leave Delhi behind and head towards Agra.

Upon arrival in Agra you will be met by your guide and driven will to the Oberoi Amarvilas, Agra’s most opulent hotel boasting stunning views of the iconic Taj Mahal. Jaipur, the famous Pink City is the capital of Rajasthan and renowned for the Palace of Winds, Amber Fort and an unimaginable bazaar where you can find everything from a turban to an exquisite gemstone. Samode Haveli is a heritage property centrally located and ideal for exploring the bazaar. Once you have settled in you will begin your bazaar tour. On this fascinating walk your guide will show you around the flower markets and then through streets and alleys to sample some of the regions specialities. You will have time to enjoy a massage, swim, read a book and just enjoy the peace of rural Rajasthan.
