Make your own perfume in Grasse
South of France, France
Grasse in the Cote d'Azur has been synonymous with perfume production since the 16th century; the scents of which are used by some of the most prestigious perfume houses of France. For a day trip, tour the perfumeries or create your very own scent.
Producing around two thirds of France's scents, food flavouring and aromas, Grasse is a fantastic place to spend the day and is widely known as the capital of perfume. A number of perfumeries open their doors to visitors and its a heady place to visit and see how over 200 local scents are made into the beautiful fragrances worn by thousands of people each day. Fragonard, Galimard or Molinard's, are all worth a visit and there are some fantastic opportunities to create your very own scent. Some do need to be booked in advance, although at Molliard's you can make and purchase a three bases, six essences fragrance which only takes 20 minutes and costs around €30. Ideal, if you are short of time.
The town itself is worth a visit. Set on top of a hillside, Grasse is both historical, stunning and ideal for those looking for a town that has that traditional French village feel. The Musée International de la Parfumerie is located in the centre, not far from the 11th cathedral, which is dedicated to Notre du Pey and home to some breathtaking architecture and art by both Rubens and Jean-Honoré Fragonard.
