A whistle stop tour of Mauritius took Indian Ocean specialist, Rachael, to all four corners of the tropical island. With over 300km of coastline to discover, it is hard to know where to start when planning a trip to Mauritius’ sandy shores. Rachael chooses her favourite properties on the island, from north to south, and east to west.

Each Mauritian coastline differs from the next but they are all amazing in their own unique way. The official language of Mauritius is English, making it an ideal destination for English speaking travellers, but it is worth noting that for many Mauritian people, their main language is creole. Nonetheless, the Mauritians have such a warmth about them, and will welcome you to their country with open arms and make you feel at home in their unrivalled hospitality. Nothing was ever too much trouble and service was always delivered with a friendly smile. With its laid back island vibes, stunning views and choice of activities on offer, the beauty of Mauritius is that you can spend your holiday being as adventurous or as lazy as you please.

North Coast- Paradise Cove

Paradise Cove is a small boutique hotel nestled in a quiet, sheltered cove in the north of the island offering panoramic views over the ocean and a secluded sandy beach. Being an adult-only resort, it is just perfect for honeymooners wanting intimacy and seclusion. All rooms are sea facing and decorated beautifully with white wash walls and a nautical theme throughout. There are only 67 rooms in total, allowing for extremely personal service in a really relaxed atmosphere. Although the beach is very small and more of a man made cove, there are 2 lovely infinity pools and 18 ‘love nests’ positioned around the resort to sunbathe in privacy. The resort offers an all-inclusive package, which is great value for money as well as the unique and innovative concept of ‘you and me moments’. With 4 different dining options, complimentary water sports and beautiful accommodation, I think this is such a lovely resort for a couple looking for a 5* boutique resort in an utterly romantic setting.

East Coast- Four Seasons

Offering five star luxury, in true Four Seasons style, the Four Seasons Mauritius resort is a serious all-rounder, offering something for everyone. The resort is made up of individual villas between 1 and 4 bedrooms, which each boast their very own plunge pools and garden so the accommodation feels spacious yet offers privacy. During my visit, the resort was almost full yet you wouldn’t have known as most people rarely venture out of their villas.

For the more active guest, there is a fantastic selection of complimentary water sports available, (motorized and non-motorised) alongside fitness classes in their state of the art gym and the availability of their golf course. For those who want to relax, there are lovely stretches of beach to laze on or for a spot of indulgence, why not head to the overwater spa on site.

The Four Seasons is renowned for its family friendly facilities and this one certainly does not disappoint. The Kids club or ‘Hobbit Village’ is superb, it has both indoor and outdoor spaces where kids can enjoy a daily schedule jam packed with activities whilst parents can happily enjoy some peace and. There is also a separate teens’ club to ensure all ages are catered for. The kids love to feed and pet the giant tortoises which roam the grounds too!

One thing that really impressed me was the dining concept, which focuses on bringing everyone together and caters for all tastes and requirements. The chefs like to get to know the guests throughout their stay, learn their likes and dislikes and tailor each meal to suit. Children can get stuck in and help to cook their own pizzas with the chef at the Italian restaurant or if guests would like casual dining, they are welcome to dine at the bar after enjoying a nice aperitif. With incredible à la carte dining options, exquisite service and its beautiful setting, the Four Seasons truly lives up to its expectations and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it!

South Coast- Shanti Maurice

My all-time favourite – Shanti Maurice. A resort like no other in Mauritius. It is a small and quiet resort, a real boutique gem on the island, ideal for couples and honeymooners. I fell in love with everything about Shanti – the exotic gardens, pristine white sands, rugged rocks, beautiful accommodation, incredible spa and completely unique and innovative dining concepts. Shanti Maurice is sure to satisfy all senses. The staff are all a compliment to the hotel – always friendly and willing to help make your experience the very best possible. I stayed in a Luxury Villa with private pool – a truly peaceful haven, spacious living and ultimately luxurious. For me, the highlight of this resort is most definitely the dining options. La Kaze Mama allows guests to dine at the home of one of the resort’s team members’ Grandmother and enjoy a meal prepared using fresh herbs and vegetables. Dining outside under the pergola with Grandma cooking Mauritian food right in front of you is a really interactive experience. You also have the Rum Shed – think of feet in the sand, sipping on rum and nibbling on BBQ style ‘picky food’ in a totally relaxed vibe. I dined in the Fish Shack during my stay, imagine open air dining under the stars overlooking the ocean with live sega dancing, Mauritian BBQ buffet and fresh salads. The food was divine – papaya salad, millionaire palm heart, fresh king prawns, tuna steaks, meats… the list goes on. Need I say more?

I was also lucky enough to enjoy a 60 minute Shanti Fusion massage in the Nira Spa – one of the largest in the Indian Ocean. A perfect end to my trip to Mauritius – I left the island feeling completely relaxed, rejuvenated, and overindulged!

West Coast- The Oberoi

The Oberoi is a stunning resort on the West coast, set in subtropical gardens with a truly tranquil and luxurious feel. As a smaller resort, it feels very quiet and peaceful – the ideal place to completely switch off, relax and recoup. I enjoyed a delicious lunch at On the Rocks – a beautiful spot on the water’s edge overlooking the tranquil turquoise ocean whilst sipping on delicious rosé wine. I enjoyed the delicious basket of home baked, gluten-free bread which was quickly replenished as soon as they noticed I had finished it– any coeliac will know that is a rarity and a real treat! I would have loved to have tried the Gunpowder Room which is highly recommended! With only 12 covers per night, booking is a must, but the culinary experience just sounds amazing with live cooking at your table within the historic building and themed Creole night and Japanese nights twice a week.

Unfortunately, my visit was too fleeting however, I did have the pleasure of staying to enjoy the infamous West coast sunset at Maradiva Villas. As they say…west is best!
