Average time to visit

The best time to visit Myanmar is during the dry season from November to April. At this time the warm and sunny days are ideal for sightseeing throughout the country. The temperatures start to rise in March, and May to September is best avoided as this is the rainy season when sightseeing can become difficult.

This compact itinerary is a great way to experience some of the highlights of Myanmar. The five night journey features stops in Mandalay, Bagan and Yangon and includes some of the country’s most beautiful cultural highlights.

  1. Days 1-2: Mandalay

Start the itinerary in Mandalay for your first night in Myanmar. We suggest a morning flight so that on arrival you can dive straight into the city with a heritage tour. You’ll have the chance to visit Kuthodaw Pagoda, otherwise known as the largest book in the world, and base of Mandalay Hill where you will find the Kyauk Taw Gyi Pagoda and Shwe Nandaw Kyaung, the last remaining building from the Royal Palace. To end the day, venture to the top of Mandalay Hill where you will be greeted with stunning views of the city, surrounding countryside and Irrawaddy River.

    Accommodation: Hilton Mandalay (1 night)

  2. Days 2-4: Bagan

Next it is on to Bagan, which you will reach by a short flight from Mandalay. To make the most of your time in Myanmar on arrival at the airport, your guide will immediately whisk you off to the temples of Bagan for a half day tour. Included are visits to Shwezigon, Wetkyi-In Gubyaukgyi with its beautiful mural paintings and the chance to get a little off the beaten track with a visit to a local village, getting a glimpse of what life is like for Bagan’s residents. The following day you’ll be taken on a full day tour of the countryside that surrounds Bagan with a visit to Mount Popa, believed to be the home of 37 guardian spirits that watch over the people of Myanmar. On returning to Bagan you’ll stop in at Shwe Hlaing, a local village famous for its toddy palm trees and the creation of this strong wine.

Accommodation: Aureum Palace Resort (2 nights)

  3. Days 4-6: Yangon

To finish the trip, we have included two days for you in Yangon, again reachable by a short internal flight from Bagan. Yangon is a charming city full of colonial relics and on arrival we have included a walking tour through downtown Yangon, specially designed to showcase some of the city’s most historic and beautiful buildings. The walk is also a fantastic way to observe everyday life in Yangon, with popular tea shops and busy local vendors. Ending the day, at sunset, you’ll visit the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda. With the sun reflecting off the shining gold leaf, this the perfect time to visit.

The following day it is time to get a little more off the beaten track in Yangon. With your private guide you’ll take the circle train to the outskirts of Yangon, in the midst of all the daily hustle and bustle as local commuters make their way around the city. From the train you’ll visit Insein Township which has a brilliant local market before heading into vibrant Chinatown and Little India. Here you can enjoy tasting street snacks before moving on to the jetty of Yangon to visit Kanauangto River Island. In complete contrast to Yangon, this is a sleepy little island with few cars and here you’ll get around by trishaw as you explore this 3-mile-long rural island. At the end of the experience head back to main Yangon for your final night in the city before departing for home the next day.

Accommodation: Savoy Hotel Yangon (2 nights)
