Inle Lake

Located in central Burma, south east of Mandalay, Inle Lake is a fascinating place to visit, with many tribes living on the shore line. At 22 kilometres long, Inle Lake is a serene and peaceful place to visit, surrounded by lofty mountains.

Inle Lake

The 'Intha' people who live around the lake are known for their peculiar style of rowing: standing on one leg they use the other leg wrapped around the oar to row. Floating vegetable gardens, built from strips of water hyacinth and mud and anchored to the bottom with bamboo poles, dot the lake’s surface and there are colourful morning markets on the lakeshores, offering a fascinating insight into daily life on Inle. In addition, Inle Lake is home to silk and lotus weaving craft shops located on stilts on the lake. A wide range of bird species also inhabits the lake and its surrounding grasslands, adding to the beauty of this fascinating water world.
