Thiripyitsaya Sanctuary Resort has a stunning location on the banks of the Irrawaddy River. The views are seriously impressive and can be enjoyed from the large swimming pool or main restaurant in addition to some of the rooms. The Deluxe Bungalows are simple and a little dated in style but some have fabulous river views. The River Suites are well-worth the upgrade cost as they are absolutely charming, each has a river view, a balcony and a comfortable four poster bed. These Suites are set away from the rest of the hotel so offer more privacy. This resort is known for its spa, so make sure you book an appointment during your stay to experience a traditional massage.

The real draw of this hotel is its position overlooking the Irrawaddy River, and just across the road from the pagodas of Bagan. There is plenty of outdoor space and the swimming pool has an amazing view! The rooms are simple and the bathrooms aren't enormous - for those looking for more space, definitely go for one of the suites. However, you probably aren't going to spend loads of time in your room so it provides an excellent base for exploring the area.

As the oldest hotel in Bagan, with the largest pool, plus its excellent location on the banks of the river, it is easy to see why this place is so popular. It boasts a tranquil setting in spacious and green gardens, which are well kept and beautifully lush despite the weather (I was there in one of the hottest months). While the Garden View and River View Rooms are fairly basic, the River View Suites are incredibly characterful and beautifully designed. They are spacious and traditionally Burmese, with the grandeur of a 4 poster bed, a living area and sizable bathroom. These are the more expensive option, but in my view totally worth it to make the most out of your stay.

Located right on the Irrawaddy River, Thirpyitsaya has a lovely fresh feel in dry and arid Bagan and provides a fantastic viewpoint to watch local life on the river. The hotel serves both Burmese and Western menus and the lunch that I had here was absolutely delicious. I had a western menu and the breads here were so fresh and such a treat!
