The best time to visit is typically during the drier, slightly milder months between November and April. The ‘rainy’ season begins in the south around June and runs until November. Belmond Maroma is a boutique resort and spa with only 63 rooms. Sat on the finest stretch of beach in the Riviera Maya, with a jungle backdrop and hidden from the tourist crowds it boasts a pretty cool location. What I really liked about the Belmond was that it retained a Mayan feel and was reflective of the destination you were in. The hotel is all low rise and made up of a collection of white-washed houses with thatched-roofs and decorated with hand-made Mexican furnishings. The Ocean Junior suites are the perfect rooms if you want to wake to the sound of waves and offer lovely views of the sea. For more privacy go for the rooms on the upper floor.

If you like dazzling white beaches, then Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa's is one of the best. It is not especially cheap, but those who are familiar with the Belmond style will know what to expect in terms of the service and facilities. All in all it's a good option for adults with good facilities and plenty of activities (note that children are not allowed) and in an excellent location near Puerto Morelos, which is as authentically Mexican as you will get on this stretch of the coast.

I'm looking forward to more unwinding the following night, at one of the growing number of actual spas. At the recently enlarged Kinan Spa at the Maroma Resort, where I'm staying, I go for an Exotico Body Polish: an exfoliating balm of crushed purple grape seeds followed by a layering of volcanic mud and a tension-dispelling coconut spritz. Maroma holds pioneer status as the first and, at almost twelve years old, the most venerable of the small resorts to offer upscale service and amenities. Like a few of the more intimate venues along this coast, it began life as a private residence, built on the grounds of a former coconut plantation. Its white stucco buildings and stone paths today aspire to the atmosphere of a village, with Mayan motifs, a nightly lighting of abundant candles, and the occasional New Age or European touch. The highlights of the grounds, for me, are the ceiba tree near the front entrance, whose engorged-looking trunk calls to mind an enormous vase; the restaurant's main archway, which artfully frames a superior beach; and a big guacamaya parrot. Loud both in its occasional squawks and in its primary-colored feathers, the bird sits on a lower tree branch in a central courtyard looking enviably happy with its lot.
