This boutique hotel feels really different- a little adults only getaway wedged between 2 big resorts. The Mayan ritual I received when checking in really washed away all my worries and negative energy. My villa was very private and came with a beautiful plunge pool and a deck to chill in the sun and also had the beautiful typical palapa roof. They cut off a piece of natural organic soap for me to use in the outdoor shower and I loved it. I even took some home as a souvenir. The beach has some rocks and is quite small but I just relaxed by the pool area with a beautiful breeze coming from the ocean.
North of Playa del Carmen is The Tides Riviera Maya, a hotel built in local rustic style and aimed at couples. Originally called Ikal del Mar, the property was rebranded as The Tides last year. It has been given an all-round revamp, and next year 12 new suites will be added to the existing 30.
My personal butler leads me through the jungle, down a winding path lit by basked lanterns strung up between the trees, to my pretty thatched palapa, cool in the shade of the overhanging palms. It feels like an authentic Mexican hideaway. My room has its own little pool and a terrace with a roomy hammock.
The huge white bed is framed in muslin and a soft, cream-coloured wool blanket is folded up at the foot. There's a woven beach bag and straw sunhat on an antique chest. Coffee and croissants are left quietly on my terrace each morning so I'm not disturbed. All palapas are set back in the jungle for total privacy, but the most glorious sheltered stretch of sand is a two-minute stroll through the gardens. At mealtimes I eat white-conch carpaccio and pan-seared sea scallops at La Marca, the Yucatecan seafood restaurant. I also try out the Casa Maya, a private-dining experience in a clearing in the jungle. The chef spreads a layer of peppers, onions, tomatoes and oregano over the freshest sea bass, parcels it up in banana leaves and bakes it over the fire. The result is rich in flavour, tender and delicious.
A circular candlelit 'jungle spa' is hidden down another path in the forest, in a large palapa. Treatments can be taken indoors or out, by the jungle or by the sea, and there is daily yoga on the beach. I go for a stupefying Riviera spa treatment, a combination of massage and mud and clay wraps, which makes me fall asleep.
This absolutely perfect property between palm and guava trees has awesome villas with rich woods, natural rattan, and private plunge pools linked by paths that wind through the vegetation. La Marea, near the lagoon pool, offers open-air Yucatecan dining. Guests detox in the Temazcal sweat lodge or via an herbal mud wrap at the spa.
