The Banyan Tree Mayakoba is a high quality resort, set amongst the mangroves and lagoons of the Riviera Maya. With their trademark architectural design and full commitment to a premium guest experience, the Banyan Tree Mayakoba is one of the most exclusive of all the resorts on the Riviera Maya.

The 116 elegantly designed one, two and three bedroom villas are extremely private and all have their own swimming pools and a garden area with high surrounding walls - perfect for romantic getaways, family trips and friends travelling together. The villas themselves are very spacious, with high ceilings and an unwavering use of high-end finishing using Mayan and Asian designs. All have a private pool and garden, creating a spacious outdoor area inspired by the courtyard houses of the Far East. The villas blend traditional Mayan handicrafts with luxury comforts. Depending on choice, your villa may also have a heated jet-pool or sunken baths, massage beds and steam rooms. The superb Three-Bedroom, three-storey Residences are perfect for families or a group of friends.

Children are welcome at Banyan Tree Mayakoba and the larger villas and three-bedroom Town House offer perfect accommodation for families. Baby equipment including cots, extra beds, buggies, monitors and high chairs can all be provided on request. Babysitting can also be arranged and for children under 12 there is an informal kids club running from 9am to 5pm, with a variety of activities including eco tours, video games, board games and beach fun.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba's luxury, award-winning spa specialises in Asian-inspired treatments and incorporates The Rainforest, offering eight different hydrothermal therapy experiences. The spa has 16 private Spa Pavilions with deluxe amenities such as sauna, bathtub, Rainmist shower and more. The resort also has a fitness centre, tennis court and kayaks guest use. There is also a wide choice of bars and restaurants within Banyan Tree Mayakoba, including 'Oriente', serving delicious Mexican specialities, the elegant 'Saffron' serving contemporary Thai cuisine overlooking the lagoon, 'Tamarind' for European-style fine dining, and the more relaxed 'Sands' located in the Beach club. For something extra special there is the Ixchel experience, where guests dine in private on a traditional floating trajinera. In-villa dining is also a great option for extra privacy.

Guests at Banyan Tree Mayakoba can indulge in a relaxing massage or some hydro therapy at the spa, join in a yoga class, take a leisurely boat trip through the mangroves looking for wildlife, relax at the beach club or enjoy a round of golf at the El Cameleón Golf Club (or drastically improve your game at the Jim McLean Golf Academy), the only PGA Championship golf course in Latin America. The 18 hole course winds through mangroves, jungle and has some stunning ocean views. Visits can also be arranged to nearby Mayan ruins such as Tulum and Coba. Scuba diving, snorkelling, swimming in cenotes, dolphin encounters, zip-lining, sailing, and guided jungle tours can also be organised.

The size of the villa and the pool is amazing, and the grounds feel huge. Although my villa was quite far away from the beach it is so much fun to use the bike (a super comfy beach cruiser) to get around and explore the whole property. As it is an Asian brand their signature restaurant offers Thai cuisine but if you feel like something more authentic try the Haab I watched some of the dinner show from the main lobby and it looked spectacular. I found myself in the more casual La Copa and enjoyed some snacks relaxing at the comfy lounge area. One of my favourite resorts as it does not feel crowded and offers lots of privacy.

Along a landscape of grassy dunes, mangroves and freshwater lagoons, Banyan Tree Mayakoba is a majestic sight upon arrival to a dark-concrete motor court with koi pond entrenched with firepots and Asian-inspired roofline leading to the interior lobby. Along a series on water inlets and saltwater mangroves leading to the Caribbean, Banyan Tree brings 21st Century architecture to the Mayakoba coast with series of detached resort buildings joined together through rectangular slate tiles and trickling fountains. A pitched-roofline contains a towering main lobby housing an in-house restaurant in a dining room of Aztec-inspired stacked-stone walls and mosaic tile detailing that brings a more intimate edge to the thoroughly modern architecture. A smaller than expected main pool compensates with private lounge areas with personal tanning ledges and nearby pool bar with collection of spa-inspired drinks and cocktails. The Banyan Tree signature spa, one of the best in Mexico, is housed within a sprawling villa of glass walls and mangrove views for hydrotherapy procedures like Rain Walks, Aroma Steam Chambers, Brine Cavern and Ice Fountain. El Camaleon Golf Course designed by Greg Norman offers one of the best courses on the Maya Riviera, just in case idle laying at Sands Beach Club with waterfront swimming pool with café and lounger service on the sand isn't your thing.

Those used to staying at Banyan Tree properties worldwide will have an idea of what to expect. It's safe to say that Mexico has not seen anything quite like it. Anticipatory service, huge pool villas so luxurious that it's hard to tear yourself away, and a wealth of fine dining options, signature spa treatments and a great beach club make this the leading resort on the coast. I loved it, but if you want authenticity and are not swayed by such flawlessly prescriptive service, then there are other places to stay. It's not really a beach resort as such, as a broad swathe of protected mangrove lagoons stands between the hotel proper and the narrow beach, but then this is all about the villa and, maybe, about the breakfast too, the best I have ever had.
