Description

The Grand Hotel Central is situated in the trendy El Born district in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. Surrounded by narrow cobbled streets lined with lively restaurants, bars and designer boutiques, the location is fantastic and the hotel, provides a quiet retreat in which to relax after a busy day sightseeing.

The Grand Hotel Central, housed in a grand 20th Century building is elegantly decorated in an urban minimalist style with wooden floors throughout, wrought iron lamps, neoclassical stairways and low-level sleek, dark furniture which is complemented by the muted color scheme. The 147 bedrooms are contemporary and comfortable and have big windows; most of which face onto Barcelona Cathedral, the Gothic district or the ancient city walls.

The hotel's restaurant, Avalon, is headed up by Ramon Freixa who successfully experiments with traditional Catalan recipes and local produce to deliver innovative and exciting dishes. The highlight of the Grand Hotel Central is the fabulous roof top infinity pool open during the warmer months. There are sunbeds and a rooftop bar making it the perfect place to enjoy a delicious cocktail while admiring the stunning views across the city while the sun sets.

The hotel also has a gym equipped with state of the art equipment, a spa with a few treatments rooms, a sauna and a steam room.

Location & Directions

Barcelona, Spain

The Grand Hotel Central is fantastically located in el Born district in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona.

When to go

Barcelona is a year-round destination. Many associate Barcelona with the summer sun, but August can be a poor choice – the city broils and swarms with tourists as the locals disappear to more salubrious climes. It is certainly better to come around mid-June or September. If beach time is not a priority, you can easily find sunny (if chilly) weather and fewer crowds in January and February. Rainfall is highest in autumn and winter. During September and into October the city often gets a wash down in cracking thunderstorms.

As Barcelona is downwind from the Pyrenees, cold snaps are always on the cards and the April–May period is particularly changeable. At its best May can be the most pleasant month of the year – clear and fresh.

September's Festes de la Mercè, a four-day festival celebrating Barcelona's co-patron saint, Nostra Senyora de la Mercè (Our Lady of Mercy) is a particularly good excuse to head to the city. This final burst of pre-winter madness features a swimming race across the harbor, a fun run, outstanding free concerts and a bewildering program of cultural events. Adding to the local color are all the ingredients of a major Catalan fiesta: castellers, sardanes (traditional Catalan folk dancing), parades of gegants and capgrossos (giants and big heads), and a huge correfoc (fire run). Events take place throughout much of the year, although there is more activity in the warmer months.
