Rajasthan is known as the desert state. It is largely hot and dry throughout the year, making it a great destination to get away during cold winter months.
Summer in Rajasthan extends from April to June. It’s the hottest season so not ideal for travel, although early April is a good time to get great value for money if you don’t mind the heat. In western Rajasthan temperatures may soar, particularly in May and June, so we'd suggest avoiding Jaisalmer and the Thar Desert at this time.
The monsoon season usually runs from July to September. The temperature drops slightly, and humidity increases. During this period 90% of the rain Rajasthan occurs, although in reality Rajasthan never receives much rainfall. Lakes and rivers will be higher and there's more colour to the landscape.
October to March is the best time to travel to Rajasthan. Expect warm and sunny weather, perfect for exploring and relaxing. Please note that hotels are at their busiest over the Christmas and New Year period. December and January can have very cool mornings and evening and we suggest taking some warm clothing. Whilst temperatures in the desert areas are always hot in the daytime, they become some of the coolest areas of the state once the sun goes down. It’s also normal to expect some fog in the major cities of northern Rajasthan in December and January.
To start planning your holiday to The Oberoi Udaivilas
The Oberoi Udaivilas is a highly acclaimed resort from India's leading luxury hotel group. Built on the opposite side of the lake from Udaipur town it features just 87 rooms and suites and a glorious lakeside setting in Rajasthan's most romantic city.
Situated on the shores of Lake Pichola, in the heart of Udaipur, one of the most romantic and beautiful cities in India that we know, The Oberoi Udaivilas is a luxurious haven built in the style of Mewari palace.
The 87 rooms and suites recreate the luxurious ambience of a royal residence, complete with fountains and courtyards. Adorned with fine Indian textiles and custom made handcrafted furniture, rooms offer stunning views of the City Palace and the Aravali Hills overlooking Lake Pichola. All rooms have luxurious marble bathrooms with Victorian-style, free standing bathtubs that overlook private walled courtyards.
At Udaivilas it is also possible to choose a room with direct access to the semi-private moated pool which surrounds the property - perfect for a cooling dip after sightseeing.
The hotel has two restaurants include the 'Udaimahal' serving traditional, Rajasthani and North Indian fare in regal surroundings and 'Suryamahal' offering a fusion of Western, Mediterranean and Thai cuisines. Alternatively guests can also enjoy picnic lunches aboard a private gondola.
The spa offers a wide range of treatments from holistic non-clinical to Ayurveda and aromatherapy and yoga sessions are also on offer. Furthermore the property adjoins a small wildlife reserve where peacocks, wild boar and deer roam so staying in this property really provides guests a feeling of getting away from it all!
The Oberoi Udaivilas offers guests 87 rooms and suites. Suites feature spacious living rooms with fireplaces and dining areas, private pools, garden terraces and two bedrooms.
Children are welcome to come and stay at The Oberoi Udaivilas. However, there are no specific facilities available for them at the hotel. Babysitting can be arranged upon request.
Facilities include the Oberoi spa offering a wide range of body treatments, holistic therapies and massages. Here you can also practise yoga and meditation. There are two stunning swimming pools, two restaurants serving both Indian and other cuisines from around the world, a fitness centre, an in house boutique and a library offering guests a collection of DVDs and CDs.
The hotel offers complimentary use of the swimming pool and complimentary yoga classes. Spa treatments, cooking lessons, astrology sessions, village tours and camel riding are all charged at an additional charge. Udaipur is an enchanting 16th century city in the heart of Rajasthan. Also known as "the city of lakes", Udaipur is surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Aravalli Mountains and regal palaces of marble and sandstone. Some of the top attractions include the City Palace Museum, Crystal Gallery, Fateh Sagar Lake, Sajjangarh, a hilltop royal residence resting about five kilometres west of Udaipur and Saheliyon ki Bari, the majestic gardens on the banks of the Fateh Sagar Lake.

Like other Oberoi properties, The Oberoi Udaivilas offers an outstanding stay with excellent service, great facilities and very grand bedrooms. The grounds are extensive here and great to walk around, especially as you take in the views across the lake.

I really enjoyed my stay at Udaivilas, there is a feeling of space and relaxation within the property and its location on the edge of the lake is perfect. It is close enough to the centre of Udaipur for you to be in town within 10 minutes should you want to do a little shopping or sightseeing with either a quick tuk tuk or for added glamour a boat across the lake to their private jetty. Yet it is far enough from the centre of town to feel utterly tranquil.
All the rooms are an excellent size, I would opt for one of Premier Rooms with direct access to the main pool or for more exclusivity the Superior Premiere Rooms all back onto a long shared pool with incredible views over the lake to the city palace. Perfect for a sunset swim.
The main restaurant Udaimahal has the ideal mix of local Rajasthani specialities (such as the pungent Laal Maas a deep red concoction of lamb and crushed chillies unlike any other curry I have tried before) alongside more contemporary Indian cooking and some western dishes too. The setting outside is perfect under the stars with those special lake views.

The Oberoi have kept within the style of Udaipur and built their very own palace on the shores of Lake Pichola. It is the very essence of opulence and beauty, with oodles of space. Something that is really great about this hotel is the number of private dining options there are on the banks of the lake. You feel like you own the place.

The Oberoi is perfect for a luxurious and supremely comfortable stay in Udaipur. With majestic views across the lake, sumptuously appointed rooms and exquisite service, you cant go wrong. Spread over a comparatively vast acreage the resorts facilities top those of any other hotel in Udaipur and if that wasn't enough, it features its own wildlife sanctuary, giving one a glimpse into the areas natural past.

Possibly my favourite Oberoi 'Vilas' property. It is located overlooking the lake, and I would always say go for a Premier Room with Semi Private Pool (the Lake View Rooms). What The Oberoi offers is space; the Lake Palace can feel a little bit enclosed at times, especially if you want to spend some R&R time in Udaipur. Whereas the Lake Palace doesn't offer much outdoor space, here you have plenty. Its also tucked away from the city, so you don't feel like it is on top of you, but close enough to experience it as much as you want. I always feel you could spend a week here quite easily.
