Perched high on the ‘roof of the world’, Tibet experiences a diverse plateau climate, with temperatures decreasing as you increase in altitude and latitude. Lhasa is pleasant year-round, with warm summers and chilly winters, but plenty of sunshine year round. Interestingly, most of the rain falls at night, making exploring the city a joy even during the rainier summer months. Due to its extreme altitude, Tibet experiences the strongest solar radiation in China, so you can expect plenty of sunshine! The winter months are predictably cold, with a surprising lack of snow for such a mountainous region. Temperature variations in a 24-hour period can be startling, often showcasing ‘four seasons in one day’ so be sure to pack plenty of layers for your Tibetan adventure.

Built in 1986, the Gyantze Hotel has been offering a comfortable place to stay for visitors to this historic town for over 30 years. With a prime position in the town, you are within walking distance of some of the fascinating sights of Gyantze, including the mighty Gyantse Dzong fortress. Rooms are simple, decorated in either the western or Tibetan style, with the latter boasting colourful fabrics and brightly painted murals on the walls. The hotel’s 3 restaurants serve dishes from Tibet, China and Nepal, allowing you to sample flavours from across the Himalayas. There is also an on-site coffee shop to relax in after a day of exploration, perhaps visiting the Buddhist stupa of Gyantze Kumbum that resides next to the 15th century Palcho Monastery.
