I arrived at Tordrillo knowing that it was a heli ski lodge run by three ex-pros one of which Tommy Moe who won downhill gold for US in 1988. As a non-skier I was a little worried that there wouldnt be enough for me to do but I was so wrong. Having arrived by float plane from Anchorage I had a quick breakfast and found my room. The lodge is comprised of 6 bedrooms in the main lodge and two further cabins as well as a large owners house all set around a picture perfect lake. The team gathered the group of guests together in the lodge and took us through the plan for the day. Skiing was off due to the poor weather on the mountain so we would take the helicopters out after lunch and head to a nearby glacier to hike and explore. Before lunch some of the group went to shoot some skeet whilst others headed out on the lake with the lodge water ski boat. Run by three adrenaline junkies the place has no shortage of toys and this particular day would be wake surfing, a combination of wake boarding and surfing whereby the boat creates a rolling wave that can be surfed on. Dry suits were donned as the water is barely above freezing and we headed out for an hour of fun. Lunch was delicious a New York style reuben sandwich with home made pastrami. Then it was time to heli. The lodge has its own helicopters on site so has total flexibility of what they want to do with them. We left flying high towards the nearby mountains before cresting a ridge and plunging down into the valley beyond. Below was a huge glacier where we were able to trek around exposed icebergs left on solid ground as meltwater had drained away. It was an incredible feeling and totally unique. It was just the start of a wonderful couple of days as there was so much for both skiers and non-skiers to do. The lodge tends to change with the seasons but there is always helicopters at hand to make the most of the mountains and the incredible wilderness that they have on their doorstep. The food is delicious and the guides are fantastic and happy to teach new skills, I learnt to fly fish and caught a couple of trout! It really is a playground and definitely has so much to do in addition to the heliskiing that the lodge was originally set up for.
