Chicago may be called the "Windy City"but this is more to do with its politics than its weather! It is actually less windy than many cities in this part of the USA. Chicago, being on the edge of Lake Michigan, can have some quite dramatic weather differentials throughout the year with all four seasons represented. It can be extremely hot and humid during the summer and bitterly cold with substantial snowfall in the winter.
The best time to visit is May and June before it gets too hot and then in the Fall months, September and October when it is still mild and even warm.

It's safe to say that the Langham was not what we expected when we walked towards it. Opposite the slightly overwhelming Trump Tower, it actually looked like an office block and we were somewhat confused as we were expecting a contemporary and elegant new offering (the hotel's been open for just 2 years to much acclaim). Our initial impression remained somewhat confused as we entered the slightly stark and business like lobby. We were ushered toward the lifts and arrived on to the hotel reception level much intrigued. In this case, first impressions were all wrong. As the lift doors opened we were greeted by something even better than anticipated. The hotel lobby is light and spacious with floor to ceiling windows taking in the city and river views below. A fun art installation of monochromatic pebbles hang above us and white leather comfy chairs and sofas wait invitingly interspersed with more colourful flower displays to ensure the appearance isn't too stark. To one side is the refined and very beautiful Pavilion Lounge, they serve afternoon tea here each day and I'm suddenly desperate to experience that for myself, it must be quite an occasion with the pianist playing and the highly tiered display trays sitting, anticipating their decadent cakes and scones.
To the other side, tucked away is the Travelle bar, buzzing and busy it seems this is the place for early evening drinks on a Friday. Subdued lighted and an impressive bar selection explain why this is a popular spot for locals and guests alike, whilst next to the bar there's a large display of fine wines waiting to be chosen and enjoyed at the Travelle Restaurant, complete with almost fully open kitchen, always a great focus point for a meal. We don't have time to sample it but I'm sure with the atmosphere, kitchen and those incredible views, it must be a special experience.
This is not a boutique hotel with a little over 300 rooms, however, it feels surprisingly warm and home from home like as we head along the corridors to the guest rooms. The dark woods are complimented with cream carpets and enough light to ensure you can see properly but it doesn't feel overwhelming, this is a good start. There is only an Executive room to show us this evening, they are almost sold out, but I'm glad we did as Id recommend them to anyone. There's so much space with a King bed and sofa and lounging area. The views aren't bad too, either of the city or the river, well worth spending some time admiring and watching the world go by. The bathroom is compartmentalised and spacious, blocked off from the room by a large smoked glass door. It's modern and fresh with everything you need. Once again, interconnecting rooms are plentiful. I hadn't really been considering this as a family friendly option but I'm pleasantly surprised, there's a Kids' Suite which is a playroom for the youngsters and even a 15-seater cinema that guests can hire out to screen a proper family movie night. The pool is also family friendly yet still good for lengths swimming as well and add to this, the only 5 star spa in Chicago and you have a rather lovely package for all.
The Langham seems to have got it right. It appeals to couples who will love the bar and restaurant and the buzzy vibe and it will also appeal to families who don't want to have to stay in something middle aged and safe just because the little ones are coming along. Oh and the location, this is the most up and coming part of town with bars and restaurants within a minutes walk and the shops 5 minutes away. Oh and of course, the river and the architecture are all on your doorstep too.
