The Home Ranch, set in the Elk River Valley, is a luxury Relais & Chateaux dude ranch near the lively Western town of Steamboat Springs. With beautiful cabins, riding for all levels, a complete children's programme and an Orvis-endorsed fly fishing lodge.
Since 1980, The Home Ranch has been offering families an idyllic Rocky Mountain retreat in the Elk River Valley. The timeless beauty of this magnificent mountain landscape has kept many visitors returning year on year, coming to experience the incredible scenery and outdoor activities. Offering an exceptionally high quality guest experience, exquisite farm-to-table Relais and Chateaux food and a wide array of challenging activities, The Home Ranch will provide an unforgettable family holiday.
At Home Ranch, the Rocky Mountain wilderness is at your disposable; fill your days with outdoor adventure and retreat to cosy cabins in the evenings, all of which ooze a refined western charm without compromising on ultimate comfort. Each cabin is a home-away-from-home, boasting sweeping views of snow-capped mountains, rolling meadows or colourful aspens. Decorated individually by the ranch owner, the western-style cabins and lodge rooms are unique and provide a peaceful refuge after a day of exploring the surrounding Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, Mount Zirkel and Elk River Valley.
The Home Ranch is an all-inclusive guest ranch, allowing families to take full advantage of all the outdoor activities on offer, as well as enjoy farm-to-table meals together in a spectacular setting. Friendly staff take care of everything, whilst you simply relax and enjoy getting back to nature. The children and teens programmes are also included, so guests need not worry about a thing when enjoying this incredible ranch getaway. Families can do as much, or as little, as they like together, with fully trained camp counsellors on site seven days a week. A great place to experience the great outdoors of the North America Rocky Mountains, The Home Ranch provides exceptional activities, service, cuisine and lodging for a memorable family holiday.
The elegant western-style accommodation at Home Ranch offers guests a warm respite after a day of adventure. There are six lodge rooms as well as eight unique cabins which are dotted around the ranch and are nestled amongst the aspens. Although each room or cabin is described as a home-away-from-home, you simply wouldn't get such spectacular mountain landscape views anywhere else.
Well-appointed and cosy, the Birdhouse is surrounded by aspens and has great views of the horses pasture. A queen bed and a loft with twin beds make it the perfect cabin for a family.
Celebrating cowboy culture decor, the Bunkhouse cabin is a high-ceilinged retreat with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, separated by a spacious living room. The cabin has had the same layout for the past 30 years, after the owner promised a guest they would never change it as they loved it so much.
A spacious home for three couples or a family of six. Columbine is a house, rather than a cabin and there are breath-taking views of Sand Mountain to admire from the wrap-around porch. It is the most luxurious cabin, featuring a stone fireplace and three bedrooms. A private hot tub sits on the rear porch tucked away at the back of the cabin – the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine and watch for deer in the aspens
This family room in the main lodge features high-ceilings and a rugged cosy style. There is a wrought-iron king bed as well as a magical hidden loft accessed by a secret staircase that children absolutely love.
The Home Ranch offers a fully serviced kids programme. Camp counsellors keep the children occupied with outdoor activities and games for however long you desire, from 8:30am to 9:00pm every single day. Each day, there is a different menu of outdoor activities that are suited to kids and they can quite literally choose what they wish to do. They will each get their own horse for the week and delight in endless on-ranch activities. There is also a junior wranglers programme, arts and crafts workshops, camp cook-outs, nature hikes, pond fishing and white-water rafting.
The Home Ranch have also developed a teens programme which, in addition to the regular riding, hiking and fishing options, can head to the hills for an overnight camp-out or go on group rides. The enthusiastic counsellors will cater to the groups needs, so the programme is mostly flexible for whatever the teens wish to do.
In addition to the wide variety of outdoor activities on offer, the ranch has a number of great facilities for guest use including a heated outdoor pool, a recreational kids room and an organic farm kitchen.
What makes Home Ranch so special is its wide variety of all-inclusive on-ranch adventures and activities. Explore breath-taking scenery on your own horse with an experienced wrangler, work cattle at the Murphy-Larsen ranch or take family trail rides. Fly-fishing on the Elk River is a wonderful way to enjoy the scenery and you will have the opportunity to catch wild rainbow, brown or brook trout. Hiking, yoga and swimming are also popular activities.
Whilst you may not want to leave the ranch, the surrounding area of Colorado Springs offers exceptional cycling along the Elk River Road, Rock Climbing in Steamboat Springs and White Water Rafting along the Elk River.
If you ask especially nicely, pastry Chef Douglas Short might invite you into the kitchen for the first morning bake. His breakfast scones are legendary and the early start is worth it for his expert tutorial.
However tired you are from riding, dont even think about skipping the barn dance. Think twinkly fairy lights, cold beers and toe-tapping music from Head Wrangler Michael Moon coming together for an infectiously energetic, authentic country ball!
Finding the words to describe my week long stay at the Home Ranch is a daunting task, simply because it was one of the most spectacular experiences of my life. Never has the real world seemed so distant, than when riding horseback across those wide-open meadows, through the magical pine-scented woodlands, and up the majestic sun-dappled mountains of Clark, Colorado. For a novice rider like myself, the knowledgeable wranglers were able to create a perfect match between me and my sure-footed horse Poco, who took wonderfully good care of me, without compromising on those memorable moments of exhilaration that come hand-in-hand (or foot-in-stirrup) with horse-riding. And yes, that was absolutely a gallop and not a lope, Poco!
Up on those trails, I felt my heart and soul expand to embrace the beauty and wonder of this extraordinary corner of Colorado and, in the cosy yoga studio of the ranch I felt my mind quieten and my body realign. If escapism and self-care is what you need, the Home Ranch is it. Being a bit of a foodie, I was keen to see what the farm-to-table ethos of the Home Ranch kitchen translated to in practise, and to say I was impressed with the culinary offerings would be an understatement. Head Chef Jonathan Gillespie and his team created exquisite menus day after day, showcasing some of the most beautiful dishes Ive had the pleasure of sampling (particular highlights including local beef cooked sous vide, and a fragrant and delicate vegetable curry). The expert wine pairing demonstrated a deep and detailed understanding of style and quality, and Pastry chef Douglas Shorts incredible desserts were a delightful daily indulgence. Sipping an after-dinner gin and tonic in the rustic lounge whilst being serenaded by the local Ranch Hand Band soon turned to dancing a joy which was repeated again at the traditional barn dance on another night turning staff and fellow guests into firm friends. Ive barely touched on the incredible star-gazing, hot-tub jumping, mountain biking, fly-fishing, swimming, hiking and skiing opportunities also available at the Home Ranch not to mention the fabulous friendships forged with other guests whether you meet in the communal dining room, around the camp fire or down at the picture-perfect barn but its safe to say this is where the really special memories are made. When I set off to Colorado, I skipped merrily off to the airport with hardly a second glance back to my family I needed the break! But when it was time to leave the Home Ranch, I couldnt stop the tears falling from my eyes. I cant wait to book my next visit, bringing all my loved ones along for the next ride out.
