Door to Hell: Darvaza Gas Crater
Known locally as "Door to Hell", Darvaza is a collapsed natural gas field popular with campers. Camp overnight to have the best view of the burning crater over dark skies.
Darvaza, located 260km away from Ashgabat, is famous for the massive burning crater, believed to be burning since 1970s. Known locally as "Door to Hell", it was originally identified as an oil field site and the engineers started drilling with an oil rig. The oil rig struck what turned out to be a natural gas pocket and the ground beneath collapsed to become a crater. Worried that the poisonous gas would be released from the crater, the engineers set fire to the crater, hoping that the gas would burn out in weeks, however it is still burning four decades later.
