Average time to visit

Situated only 6° south of the equator, Zanzibar enjoys ideal holiday weather. Temperatures average between 24°C and 27°C throughout the year with 7-9 hours of sunshine per day.

There are 2 rainy seasons: Acute, brief showers, lasting about an hour in the morning occur for a couple of weeks during November. The rains last slightly longer in April and May, but even then it does not rain every day. These rains replenish the Island and are often referred to as the “Green Season”.

Matemwe Lodge is perched on a coral rock, surrounded by stunning beaches and warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. It lies opposite the Mnemba Atoll which offers spectacular diving and snorkelling. With only 12 suites, it is small and intimate.

Matemwe Lodge has a stunning setting, on low coral cliffs at the end of one the best beaches in Zanzibar. This laid-back, friendly lodge has a relaxed, unpretentious feel and comprises 12 thatched bungalow suites all overlooking the Indian Ocean. Outsized bathtubs, private verandas (all with a hammock) and warm sea breezes add to the chilled out atmosphere.

Seafood is, understandably, a speciality, a delicate mix of African and European flavours, and the new Sail Bar is an excellent place to round off the day with a cocktail under the stars. The lodge is just a few minutes by boat from the superb diving and snorkelling reefs at Mnemba Atoll and is a perfect place to unwind.

The north east part of Zanzibar Island is known as Matemwe. This area is famous for its fine white sand beaches, the contrasting colours of the Indian Ocean and the beauty of the coral reef around the Mnemba Island. Matemwe borders a small fishing village where local fisherman set out on a daily basis in their traditional dhows passing close to Matemwe.

The stretch of perfect beach alongside the lodge is shared only with the fishing village, which is situated on the far side of the soft sand. There are not many beaches in Zanzibar still featuring only one resort; care has been given to ensure privacy and exclusivity through out the resort.

Matemwe is just 60 minutes drive from Stone Town, allowing for easy day trips and excursions to the many different and varied interesting places on offer in Zanzibar.

Then there are seventeen standard rooms at the guesthouse, all of which are en suite. Seven of these are on the front row and are set back a little from the beach for privacy. The other 10 rooms are further back from the beach and offer a glimpse of the sea and a cool breeze though the night.

Asali Suite

Ideal honeymoon suite with one double bed and separated from the main lodge for privacy. It has its own plunge pool and two dedicated staff to cater to your every need.

Although there are not specific childcare facilities, children are most welcome to come and stay at Matemwe Lodge. Menus and meal times can easily be tailored to suit the younger guests. Babysitting can also be arranged for those that require it.

Matemwe has a multi-level inviting swimming pool surrounded with comfortable lounge chairs overlooking the ocean, providing the perfect setting to relax with a good book. Tempting freshly mixed cocktails are served at the poolside bar.

Local snorkeling and diving sites are suitable for all levels of experience, from beginners to experienced divers. Guests can snorkel straight from the beach or during reef walks and kayaks are available to explore the crystal clear sea.

From Matemwe, day-trips can be arranged to the historic centre of Stone Town, Jozani Forest or Prison Island, or a Spice Tour to learn about the great variety of spices that the island is famous for.

Matemwe Bungalows - now renamed Matemwe Lodge - is a super little spot on Zanzibar's coastline, fringed by the classic Zanzibar black coral but with a great beach with very fine powdery sand underfoot - lovely for strolling along!

The lodge's rooms are perched slightly higher than the beach, with a cooling breeze passing through. There are two main swimming pools to relax around, and a great pool bar with an original sperm whale skull - quite fascinating! The staff are friendly and attentive, and the service is very good.

There is a great restaurant with views out over the beach and the sea - when we visited they were preparing lunch and the smells coming from the kitchen were mouthwatering! Matemwe tries to use surf-fresh fish wherever possible and the menu choice for the day included fish roasted with garlic and lemon, and a variety of other dishes including some great vegetarian options. A little further from the restaurant onto the beach, the lodge also has a good little watersports centre for those wishing to be a bit more active.

The rooms are a little dark but nicely decorated, some with an upstairs "mezzanine" level which would be perfect for children - all have views over the beach. It's not a luxurious lodge but is extremely comfortable and with a great position and lovely beach would make a lovely stop at the end of a trip around Tanzania.

Matemwe Bungalows is a great place to go if you are wanting a relaxed beach lodge. It is small and intimate with an informal atmosphere. The rooms are all spacious and comfortable with lovely sea views. There are two pools to relax by during the day and an informal bar and restaurant area. The lodge is set on the side of the cliffs with the beach to one side; the beach is quite small. Diving can be arranged from the lodge. Matemwe Bungalows is well priced and if you are looking to head for some sun to a comfortable laid-back property it would work well.
