Average time to visit

There is no truly perfect time to go for this itinerary as weather varies between each country and even area of country. However, if you are keen to see the flower in bloom in the Northern Cape it is worth starting your trip around August and September. If this is not your priority, this itinerary can be taken any time, but should be dependent on where you're seeking the best weather.

Itinerary

Journey through southern Africa by road, immersing yourself in the spellbinding scenery of South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. You’ll get dose of culture in Cape Town, witness the otherworldly landscapes of the Northern Cape and the mighty dunes of Namibia, float down the rivers of the Caprivi strip, teeming with wildlife and end at Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Almost completely self-drive you’ll have total independence to explore this part of Africa.

  1. Fly to Cape Town

  2. Days 1-5: Cape Town & the Western Cape

Your epic trip across southern Africa begins in the Mother City, Cape Town. As you drive into Cape Town, you’ll see Table Mountain towering over the city bowl, and catch a glimpse of the glistening azure water of the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. You will head to Four Rosmead Guesthouse, situated on a pretty residential tree-lined street, which will be your base for the next 3 nights. Take the cable car up to Table Mountain and feel your excitement build as you edge closer and closer to the top and contemplate the extraordinary view over the rugged coastline of the Cape and the historic Waterfront. As your day comes towards a close head back down into the city to Kloof Street, which is just around the corner from your guesthouse. Kloof Street presents some of Cape Town’s most renowned restaurants; we recommend Kloof Street House, which is bursting with character and energy.
During your time in Cape Town we recommend you drive through the scenic coastal roads of Chapman’s Peak, where you can stop of quaint little fishing villages. For a change of scenery, head to the Winelands, passing lush green mountains and sample the world-renowned food and wine in the vineyards.

    Accommodation: Four Rosmead (4 nights)

  3. Days 5-7: Paternoster, Western Cape, South Africa

You will have a change of scenery today as you drive north out of Cape Town and to the fishing village of Paternoster. You will take a short detour through West Coast National Park on the way and admire how multifaceted it is as you pass lush, grassy plains, wildflowers (during spring), wildlife like antelope and the cyan-coloured water of the vast lagoon.
You will arrive at Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel, your home for the next two nights. Hidden away on the shores of Paternoster, with stunning views of the sand dunes and sea you can enjoy this idyllic place and just simply be. If you’re feeling more adventurous, take to a kayak and paddle over the gentle waves or jump on a bike and cycle through the village. You won’t need to venture far for some delicious food as the Leeto Restaurant onsite offers local seafood to die for.

Accommodation: Strandloper Ocean Lodge (2 nights)

  4. Days 7-9: Northern Cape, South Africa

Today your drive takes you out of the Western Cape to the gateway of the Northern Cape to Papkuilsfontein Guest Farm where you will spend the next two nights. You will be welcomed by a magnificent landscapes which are dominated by a canyon close by and if you are visiting during August and September you’ll be met by endless colours of wildflowers. There is no phone signal here and Wi-Fi is only in the main area, so you can really switch off and immerse yourself in the Karoo way of life. Over the next couple of days, explore these serene landscapes on hiking trails and take a dip in the natural pools. Bike through this vast scenery and end your day with an ice-cold beer on the ridge of the canyon, watching the burnt orange glow of the sun settle on the rocks as the sun begins to set.

Accommodation: Papkuilsfontein Guest Farm (2 nights)

  5. Days 9-11: Kakamas near Augrabies Falls, Northern Cape, South Africa

For the next two days, stretch your legs and head out on foot into Augrabies Falls National Park. Hike through this dramatic park to the mighty Orange River and gaze down as it thunders through a ravine and surges down into a spectacular waterfall. In full flood, the noise from this waterfall is deafening. Sink into tranquillity in the natural hot springs and admire the beauty of this park. You will check in at Klein-Aus Vista, Desert Horse Inn, your base for the next couple of nights. Surrounded by sweeping vistas, enjoy the freedom to explore this great expanse at your own pace, on foot, on an exhilarating bike ride or canter through the wild on horseback.  On your full day we recommend a visit to the eerie ghost town of Kolmanskop, in which the sand filled buildings of this diamond settlement are becoming ever-more absorbed by the encroaching desert.

This afternoon enjoy this stylish lodge, sinking into tranquillity by the pool with the most epic views surrounding you. Head out on a sundowner game drive and witness the most spectacular golden hour, as the warm glow of the sun blankets the savannah. In the morning, venture out to the brilliant orange sand dunes and look up in admiration at “Big Daddy”, the largest of the dunes before clambering to the top for a truly unearthly, panoramic viewpoint. You can then spend some time in Deadvlei, an icon salt pan dotted with gnarled camelthorn trees.

The lodge is set amongst lush foliage and manicured gardens, and a feeling of calm descends as you walk down to the glistening river. After relishing on a hearty lunch on the deck you will head out on a boat safari. Float down the still water, watching crocodiles gliding along surface and pods of hippos submerged in the water. Your guide will open up a bottle of bubbly as the sun begins to set and you will feel the serenity of this stunning region, watching the sky turn a fuchsia pink, and observe the vibrant birdlife flying amongst the vegetation surrounding you.
