Via Ferrata on Jebel Shams
Jebel Shams, Oman
Not for the faint-hearted, today's adventure will involve climbing up 200-metre cliffs to the top of Jebel Shams, Oman's highest mountain, with the assistance of a steel Via Ferrata cable.
Your journey will start with a trek along the famous 'Balcony Walk', which sits on the edge of the 2,000-metre deep canyon. You will stop at the abandoned village of Sap Bani Khamis to take in the views before climbing up the scree to the start of the Via Ferrata.
The Via Ferrata path was once a stairway used by local villagers, and the steel cable now runs all the way up the cliffs. This is an exhilarating experience and the views are incredible, however unsurprisingly, this is not suitable for anyone who has a fear of heights. As you will have the steel cable for assistance, you do not need to be an expert climber, although a reasonable level of fitness is required.
The whole adventure takes around four hours to complete, and you will have lunch at the top of the mountain. The road transfer from Muscat is around 3-4 hours either way, and the transfer from the mountain hotels is roughly 2-3 hours each way depending on the property.
