La Villa is an old French Manor House and is over 100 years old and sits in the old quarter of Pondicherry known as 'white town'. Pondicherry was the base for the French East India Company, as opposed to Madras (now Chennai) which was the base of the English East India Company. 'Pondy' as it is lovingly known locally, fuses French style and bohemian-chic with Indian architecture and bluster and is a delightful place to amble around by day (you can use La Villa's bicycles). A few of the locals still speak French, and you will find quaint cobbled streets, colonial era pastel painted townhouses and you can expect to tuck into amazing Franco-Indian fusion cuisine at every meal. Delve into the many cafes, restaurants and shops before picking up a freshly baked baguette. This is France in India, and La Villa is simply the best place to stay in this fascinating town.
La Villa has just six suites and as such retains an exquisite and exclusive feel about it. French designers Tina Trigala and Yves Lespirit set to work styling the hotel, retaining the old-world charm yet creating a luxurious and modern space within it, packed with little touches of designer brilliance. Blending mosaic hand-made tiles, lime plaster, local granite and teak, they have perfectly retained the old, yet brought in the new. La Villa comes across as understated, yet refined and utterly inviting in every way.
The six suites are located on either the first, second or third floor. There are four slightly smaller suites, and all except 'India Song' have an outdoor area, be it an in-room patio, balcony, terrace or veranda. The first floor rooms (North Side Story, South Side Story and Timeless) overlook the delightful hotel 40m2 pool. The rooms are wonderfully furnished with seating areas, rain-forest showers (sorry no bathtubs we're afraid) and wonderfully comfortable beds. La Villa have imported French linens and toiletries from Fragonard, yet kept little touches and design elements from the local area.
The Restaurant is located outside on the ground floor and the breakfasts are superb (French continental of course). The restaurant opens at 1230 and goes onto 2230 at night and serves European fare.
La Villa is perfect for those wanting a peaceful, upmarket and refined boutique hotel and is ideal for honeymooners or couples. The hotel doesn't permit children under 15, so you can peacefully read your book next to the pool without being splashed by some over enthusiastic whippersnappers trying to show off.
Next door, the Villa Shanti is La Villa's sister property, and again offers more culinary options. We suggest at least three nights in Pondicherry to fully let this magical corner of India soak in. Blend it with a journey into the historic heartlands of Tamil Nadu such as Tanjore or Madurai, or some of its rural charms like Chettinad or Rajjakad.
There are six suites at La Villa Pondicherry all featuring the latest amenities including Fragonard amenities, rain-forests showers, mini-bar, laptop safe, WiFi, tea/coffee maker, work desk, hair dryers, LED TVs and a seating area. There are four slightly smaller suites, Escale à Pondicherry, India Song, North Side Story and South Side Story. Escale a Pondicherry comes with a balcony, and North Side Story and South Side Story have in room patios. The two larger suites, Timeless and Bridge to Heaven have larger verandas and terraces.
|Escale à Pondicherry||
The Escale à Pondicherry is located on the Ground Floor and has a Queen Bed covering 46m2 and has a balcony and small seating area
The India Song is the only room without a balcony, terrace or veranda and is located on the Ground Floor and features Twin Beds, these can be put together to form a King Bed. The room is somewhat narrow.
|North Side Story||
The North Side Story is located on the 1st Floor and covers 38m2 and has an in room patio and has a Queen Bed. The Suite overlooks the pool.
|South Side Story||
The South Side Story covers 39m2 and is located on the 1st Floor and features a Queen Bed. It has a small in-room patio. The Suite overlooks the pool.
Scott Dunn's favorite Suite, Timeless covers 70m2 and has its own veranda and is located on the 1st floor. It has a king size bed and a larger sitting area. The Suite overlooks the pool.
|Bridge to Heaven||
The Bridge to Heaven is located on the 2nd floor and has a large exterior veranda. It covers 70m2 and features a King size bed.
La Villa has an outdoor restaurant which moves inside should it rain as well as a lovely swimming pool. WiFi is available throughout the hotel. Across the road you will find their sister property, Villa Shanti which has a wonderful restaurant and cocktail bar.
