November to April brings the best weather, downpours are rare, and there’s usually enough sun to get fabulous photographs of the ice, with bright sunshine most days. In March and April, Fall colors are spectacular, as the lenga on upper slopes of the mountains turns scarlet. The majority of the region is closed for winter June to August, when weather makes the area very inhospitable. December and January are high season and the glacier trips are at their busiest. September, October and March is a great time to visit, when there are fewer crowds, and the weather can still be beautifully mild. Bear in mind, though, that weather on the glacier is completely unpredictable all year round, since the winds coming over the Andes, are constantly changing.

Estancia Helsingfors is an intimate rustic lodge set on the shores of Lake Viedma in the heart of Argentina's Los Glaciares National Park, four hours to the north of El Calafate en route to El Chaltén, with stunning views of the majestic Andes Mountains.
Estancia Helsingfors, set at the heart of Argentina's Patagonia region and approximately four hours north of El Calafate, is surrounded by stunning landscapes, sheltered by coniferous woods which give way to panoramic views of the lake and snow capped peaks. The ranch has nine en-suite guest rooms, decorated in a rustic style combining traditional, simple colors and textures that blend in with the environment.
Part of what makes Helsingfors a unique experience is the regional cuisine on offer. The ranch has its very own vegetable garden and a refined cellar with a variety of Argentine and Chilean select vintage wines to accompany traditional local dishes, such as Patagonian lamb and trout. There are various activities to participate in around the estancia, predominantly horseback riding and trekking. Unlike many estancias, there are no on-site stables because the horses roam wild in the surrounding property; and for advanced riders it is possible to participate in the morning round up.
Accommodation at Helsingfors is in nine individually decorated guest rooms, all with private bathroom. Some of the rooms have a whirlpool bath and others have a Scottish shower.
Children are welcomed at Helsingfors. There are two triple rooms available and cots can be arranged on request. A stay at Helsingfors is great for families who enjoy the outdoors although some of the hiking and riding excursions are only really suitable for older children as the terrain can be challenging in places.
Helsingfors has a restaurant specializing in regional cuisine, a living room and bar with an open fireplace, and wine cellar. The lodge also has its own horses for riding excursions, fishing rods and motor boat for navigations. Please note there is no mobile phone coverage at the estancia and just one phone in reception for incoming calls.
A variety of activities are on offer at Helsingfors including boat trips to Viedma glacier (weather permitting), trekking to Laguna del Morro, trekking or horse riding to Blue Lagoon and fishing.
The deluxe main house is a replica of the original dwelling of Alfred Ramstrom, a Finnish settler who, at the start of the century was moved by the beauty of the landscape, and in honour of the capital city of his native land, christened it Helsingfors. Situated on the south-west shore of Lake Viedma, the hostel looks over the Fitz Roy, surrounded by forest, lakes, glaciers and mountains. The current owners, Pablo Crespo and Paula and Alfonso Susacasa, have added other pleasures to the place, such as their gourmet cuisine and daily cruises to El Chalten on the Huemul boat.
