Set spectacularly at the foot of Cachi's rugged mountains, surrounded by hills, rivers and streams
Great wine cellar with a selection of Argentinean wines and wines grown in the high-altitude region of Cachi and Cafayate
Just 14 simple yet comfortable rooms, all with private bathroom and heating for cooler evenings
The weather is good almost all year round in Salta and the north west in general. It’s warm and dry in winter (June to September) though it gets cold at night. Summer (December to February) is hot and there’s no air conditioning in most rooms. Avoid the rainy season of February to March, when many of the roads to places you'll want to explore may be impassable due to flooding.
La Merced del Alto overlooks breathtaking scenery and is the ideal base from which to explore Argentina's northwest colonial town of Cachi, which sits nearby, and the surrounding Calchaqui Valley. With just 14-rooms, there is an intimate atmosphere.
Hotel La Merced del Alto is set in the stunning Calchaqui valley, just 2km from the historic town of Cachi in Argentina's rugged and unspoilt northwest. The wild and rugged landscapes which can be found in this region can be explored at leisure or with a guide, following a series of trails on foot, by bike or on horseback. For those feeling less adventurous, opt for the comfort of a 4-wheel drive exploration to soak in those views.
The hotel has just 14 spacious rooms, some with mountain views. All exude a calm simplicity, with white walls, bamboo ceiling detailing and terracotta tiled floors. Huge, comfortable beds are dressed with crisp white linen, whilst the bathrooms are light and airy. A stay here is all about the outdoors and relaxing and the decor reflects the relaxed atmosphere of the property.
The hotel's public areas - the lounge, bar and outdoor terrace - are beautifully decorated too, with colourful local textiles and chunky wooden furniture featuring prominently throughout. The outdoor pool and sun deck afford spectacular views across the valley and is the perfect spot from which to really enjoy this beautiful property.
The 14 rooms have attractive rustic décor, with carved wooden or iron bedsteads, whitewashed walls, high ceilings and terracotta floors accentuated with local art and textiles. Six of the rooms have panoramic views of the hills. All have a private bathroom and are heated to combat cooler evenings.
Children are welcome at the hotel but there are no specific facilities or interconnecting rooms.
Facilities include a restaurant, wine cellar, swimming pool and spa. Internet is also available and there is a large lounge in which to relax with TV and DVD selection.
Horse riding and trekking in the surrounding hills, relaxing and enjoying the beautiful surroundings of the hotel, wine tasting and visiting the local town of Cachi with its colonial architecture. Guests can also enjoy biking or taking out a kite buggy and tours in the surroundings by 4-wheel drive.
