Average time to visit

Rekero Camp is closed in April and May.

The only time to avoid Kenya is during the long rainy season in April and May. November is considered the short rainy season, however, these are less predictable and are much lighter. The best time of year to visit the Maasai Mara is during the Great Wildebeest Migration which tends to pass through the Mara between mid July to late October.

Insider's View

One of my favourite African mornings has to be waking up to hear a herd of elephant feeding round and over my tent, with that wonderful rumbling sound as they communicated to each other. Then I noticed a tiny little baby elephant standing right by my wash basin in front of my tent…magical.

If you are lucky you might see a mini wildebeest crossing over the Talek from Rekero.

Request a private dinner in front of your tent - very special with your own private view of the river!

Rekero Camp is a small exclusive tented safari camp, situated amidst the teeming mass of wildlife in the Maasai Mara area, near the confluence of the Mara and Talek rivers in the South of Kenya. Nine traditional safari tents accommodate up to 20 guests.

Rekero Camp is managed by the Beatons, one of the original pioneering families who arrived in Africa in 1889. Guests will experience old time hospitality, combined with outstanding guiding as well as a unique insight into the Maasai Mara’s wildlife, culture, flora and fauna. The camp is set up seasonally (June - March) and caters for up to twenty guests in nine large tents of which two are family tents. The tented rooms have en-suite bathrooms with a flush loo and hot bucket showers.

Rekero Camp is found in the heart of the Maasai Mara Game Reserve on the banks of the Talek River. There is small crossing point close to the camp, which games comes down to drink at and during the migration wildebeest often cross hear.

This tented camp is ideally situated for the annual migration, which is the movement of over one million wildebeest and two hundred thousand zebra from the Serengeti through to the Maasai Mara in Kenya. Every year the camp is broken down and removed for two months to allow the bush and the many wildlife neighbours to return to the site leaving a fresh and recovered wilderness for the next season.

Lighting is by a solar powered inverter in the tents and kerosene lanterns are situated in front of the tents to provide subtle lighting of the exterior and front.

Each tent has en-suite bathroom with a flush loo and hot shower.

Family Tent

There are 2 family tents each with three beds, also having an en-suite bathroom with hot shower and flushing loo.

Rekero Camp welcomes children over the age of 6, the camp is not suited to very young children as the camp in unfenced and for this reason children must be supervised at all times. There are also two family tents with the children's room behind the bathroom. Food can be tailored to suit and earlier meal times can be arranged where necessary. Babysitting can be organised for those that require it.

Activities include wildlife viewing and bird watching which are done by specially adapted vehicles or outside the park on foot. With both, you are in the company of experienced Il Dorobo and Masai guides who can share with you, through their eyes, a world that only they know. Hot air balloon safaris can also be arranged on request.

Louisa Verney (Staff)

I love Rekero's position in the Mara, tucked away on the banks of the Talek River. The tented rooms are simple but well spaced out and very comfortable and all have views over the river onto the plains. But you really stay at Rekero for the fantastic guides and a chance to explore the Maasai Mara with people who know and love the area and know how to escape the crowds. The food is fantastic farmhouse style and meals are all eaten at a big family table with interesting discussions about what has been seen that day on game activities.
