Leh
Perched high in the Himalayan mountain kingdom of Ladakh, Leh is surrounded by rugged peaks and overlooked by the imposing ruins of the former palace, its style reminiscent of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. At an altitude of 3,500 metres, a few days of acclimatisation are required, but the laidback charm and stunning surrounds of the town invite a slower pace.

While the town itself is a bustling warren of shops and restaurants, just a short walk brings you to crystal clear mountain streams and lush fields, set against a backdrop of cragged mountain peaks. Adrenaline-junkies are spoilt for choice with trekking and white water rafting, while the wealth of monasteries, gompas and temples offer a fascinating insight into Buddhism in this remote region.
