Xian and the surrounding regions experience four distinct seasons and a continental climate. Summers are hot and humid, with maximum temperatures often above 40°C, however the monsoon season brings plenty of rainfall to temper the scorching heat. Winters are cool and dry, and not unpleasant for exploring the sights of the region, but cold weather clothing and layers are advisable as temperatures drop to freezing. Spring is pleasantly warm, with gentle breezes and long sunny days, making March through to May the best times to visit Xian. Autumn temperatures are similarly mild; however, September and October often bring frequent rain showers.

The Shangri La is located outside of the old city walls which makes it easily accessible from the station and airport. I arrived late on a train from Beijing and it was very convenient to be so close. If you are looking to get out on foot and explore Xian it may not be as convenient as those hotels located more centrally. If however you are mainly interested in seeing the Terracotta Warriors and less interested in exploring the other parts of the city then its certainly somewhere I would recommend. Rooms are standard Shangri-La Style, luxurious if a little bit uninspired but the views form the higher floors of the city are great. There is an excellent indoor pool which would make this a good choice for families and the dinner I had in the hotels Thai restaurant was very good and a nice change from local Chinese cuisine.

The Shangri-La Xian is located in the business district of Xian, outside of the old city walls. This means that the property does have a newer more modern feel taken from its area, surrounded less by history and more by daily commerce. However, it does have some brilliant interconnecting rooms, a very large pool and three different restaurants to chose from which all have an individual feel. I had a delicious dinner in the Thai restaurant which was so delicious
