From the subtropical lowlands in the south up to glacier-capped mountains in the north, Yunnan is a province of extremes. The climate varies so much across this vast and diverse area, that it has given rise to an ancient Chinese saying: “You can enjoy all four seasons on the same mountain, with each just a few miles from the next”. Generally speaking, most of Yunnan province is mild in winter and cool in summer, with large variances in temperature occurring across the day. Mornings can start with a wintery chill, and warm up to 25°C by lunchtime. Spring and Autumn are mild and pleasant and the best times to visit Yunnan, despite May being the rainiest month of the year. For snow-capped mountains and dramatic alpine scenes, the winter months of November to January can be spectacular.

I adored my time staying at the Banyan Tree Ringha. I was here in the mountains for two days which passed far too quickly and I will surely return. The hotel is located on the outskirts of Shangri La town and overlooks a gentle rolling valley with a stream running through it and herds of grazing animals wandering past. The hotel is made up of small individual houses centred around a main lodge which has the two restaurants, lobby lounge and viewing terrace over the valley complete with telescope for star gazing. Its also home to the resident pet a huge Tibetan Mastiff called Laika, dont get too close... Each of the houses are split into rooms, mine was on the upper level of one house with a balcony to sit out on. Inside everything is very traditional with lots of dark wood and lacquered furniture. The beds are floor height with large wall hangings surrounding them in the local Tibetan style. It's cold up here and the rooms are fantastically cosy, the highlight is the cedar circular bathtubs which are wonderful to relax aching muscles after going for a trek.

Set in a stunning mountainside location right next to a local town, Banyan Tree Ringha definitely feels like you have stepped off the regular tourist trail. The hotel itself is converted from some of the original farmer's houses in the village which are in the traditional Tibetan style. Local women wonder around the town wearing the traditional local dress and yaks, cows, pigs and sheep graze in and around the hotel giving you the full countywide experience. It was such a breath of fresh air visiting here being right in the middle of the countryside and a chance to go for walks down by the river and through the town. You have to be careful here not to over do it as you are 3000 metres above sea level and you definitely feel it - walking should be slowly, slowly!

As we were approaching Shangri La and its surrounding areas, you could really feel the impact of the high altitude, but as we approached Banyan Tree Ringha I could see that my shortness of breath was worth it! Like a little Tibetan village, the hotel is an amazing retreat set in this beautiful countryside. All the Suites are traditional in style, with many Tibetan influences, and the service is spot on. I felt completely at home in my 2 bedroom Tibetan Lodge, and although it might not be the typical 5* hotel you are used to, it is the perfect way to appreciate Yunnan's unique way of life.
