Description
Set amid tall spruce and pine trees on the edge of the Kicking Horse River and just half an hour from Lake Louise, Cathedral Mountain Lodge offers a luxury log cabin getaway with the stunning scenery of the Yoho National Park at your doorstep.
An unassuming lodge, Cathedral Mountain is a tucked away little secret providing the perfect base for exploring this beautiful area of the Rockies. With over 500 kms of trails within easy reach, the hiking here is superb and with the stunning Takakkaw Falls close by, guests are sure to love exploring this beautiful area.
The lodge is small and intimate. The cabins are set within the trees leading down to the river and the main restaurant and cosy lounge are in the main lodge building. Designed by noted Vancouver architect Brad Lamoureux, the reclaimed Douglas Fir posts and beamed building is the hub of activity within the lodge. The Dining Room and Great Room of the lodge boast 24 foot high ceilings and 18 foot high windows, ensuring scenic views all around.
The cuisine here is superb and has been voted one of the best restaurants in Canada on several occasions. The talented chefs prepare dishes unique to the Canadian Rockies, giving guests a true insight into the delicious treats of this area.
The river rock fireplace in the Great Room is warm and inviting and is double sided to the verandah giving a welcome heat for the chillier summer evenings. Books about the area with its flora and fauna are available for guests to enjoy and binoculars are on hand for that all important wildlife viewing. Elk, moose, bears and wolves as well as diverse bird species are often seen from the lodge.
There are 31 cabins in total. They have been lovingly constructed and offer that real cosy log cabin feel whilst still ensuring a very comfortable stay. All have gas or wood burning stove, pine log beds, cosy duvets and splashes of local colour. Canadian antiques are carefully selected to enhance the feel of the cabins and all offer an outside balcony with seating to enjoy the intoxicating fresh mountain air. There are no TVs in the cabins in order to protect the peace and quiet of the environment.
Some cabins offer an additional loft room with two beds, making them ideal for families. Due to the steepness of the ladder, these are only really suitable for older children.
With a huge choice of activities in the area, Cathedral Mountain Lodge provides the perfect base for an extended stay.
Accommodation
Cathedral Mountain Lodge has 31 traditionally crafted log cabins set in beautiful surroundings. Choose from Deluxe King, Queen or Twin Cabins, each with gas fireplaces, vaulted ceilings and oversized windows to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Each bathroom has a deep soaker tub and Aveda amenities. Beds have cosy down duvets and feather pillows.
Premier Cabins also enjoy a wood burning stove and private decks overlooking the Kicking Horse River. Premier Cabins with Loft are ideal for older families as the loft offers a further two twin beds accessible by ladder.
Childcare
Children over 8 years of age are welcome at the lodge although there are no particular facilities for them. The Loft Suites work well for older children although there is a ladder leading up to these so they will need to be confident with steep steps.
Facilities
Cathedral Mountain Lodge has a restaurant and lounge with a cosy open fire. There is also an outside deck for you to relax on. There is internet available on the hotel computer only - no WiFi available.
Activities
During your stay at Cathedral Mountain Lodge, you can go hiking and climbing with over 500 km of hiking trails in the area including the Iceline and Larch Valley trails and guided hikes to the Burgess UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fly fishing and lake fishing are available nearby. You could go boating and rafting on the Kicking Horse River or canoeing at nearby Emerald Lake.
Reviews
Charlotte Austin (Staff)
Even though this property is just off the highway when I arrived you really felt like you were in the middle of nowhere. The cabins here are great and have a true log cabin in the mountains feel to them. The cabins have all of the facilities you need and the areas surrounding these cabins are fantastic with plenty to do.
