The Maha monsoon blows from October to January, bringing rain to the North and East, while the dry season is from May to September. The North and East are comparatively dry, with around 1000mm of rain annually. There is also an inter-monsoonal period in October and November when rain can occur in many parts of the island. Out-of-season travel has its advantages – not only do the crowds go away but many airfares and accommodation prices drop right down. Nor does it rain all the time during the low season.

Description

Wild Grass is a simple eco-Lodge set amidst acres of wilderness in the rural village of Kumbukkadanwala near Sigiriya Rock. It is a nature lover’s paradise with minimal amenities, but located conveniently to explore the sights of the Cultural Triangle.

Surrounded by jungles, a lake and the Kandalama hills, Wild Grass is a welcoming eco-retreat where you can enjoy nature without having to sacrifice comfortable living. Utterly tranquil and immersed in the wilderness, life unfolds here at your own pace. Set off on an adventurous nature trail; visit nearby Sigiriya or Dambulla and by nightfall have a candlelit dinner accompanied by the sounds of the jungle.

Wild Grass is set amidst 30 acres of unfenced wilderness that is visited by the occasional wild elephant, rabbits, deer, wild boar and over 40 species of birds.

Accommodation here is in single story or duplex villas that have been built with the minimum disturbance to the natural surroundings. Floor to ceiling glass windows make the most of the views, although it is worth being aware this can attract insects at night time if the lights are on. Whilst they cannot get into the villa, the tapping on the glass can be a little disconcerting at first.

The single story villas are raised on stilts and so offer wonderful views across the jungle canopy. The duplex villas have a downstairs living room and upstairs bedroom and enjoy views towards the lake.

The decor is simple with wooden floors and furniture, and the beds are comfortable with soft white linen. The bathrooms are polished concrete (a Sri Lankan style-favourite!), and all of the showers are open-air.

An open sided, two storey pavilion located away from the villas houses the lounge and the restaurant, with views towards the magnificent Kandalama hills. Wild Grass have recently acquired a new chef who has won awards for his Sri Lankan curries and so it is definitely worth sampling a selection of local dishes whilst here.

A strict nature conservation philosophy is followed here and much is being done to preserve the natural eco-systems. Organic farming methods are used to cultivate fruit and vegetables for the resort’s use with the balance requirements purchased from the villagers who are also encouraged to use eco-friendly practices.

Wild Grass is an ideal get away for nature lovers who like their privacy and are looking to spend a quiet couple of nights in beautiful surroundings.

I love Wild Grass! It has such a wonderful peaceful atmosphere, and I really like the simple design of the villas. You get a feeling of wilderness without having to compromise on the comfort.

I don't think it's necessarily going to be for everyone, as it is more basic than the luxury properties in the area, however for those who like their hotel experiences more on the rustic side, this is perfect.

I had one of the best dinners in my entire trip here. So many different curries, each one of them absolutely delicious. The raised level of the restaurant means you have great views across the whole countryside, and we watched three storms going on in the distance which was pretty spectacular.

Location-wise it's also great for exploring the Cultural Triangle. There are some nice activities available on-site as well, including nature walks and bike rides.

Wild Grass is great for nature lovers and those who want to feel secluded and surrounded by nature. It feels intimate and private, the service is excellent and the food delicious!

I was in a glass sided one bedroom villa and slept with my curtains open so that I could wake up to a very natural view. I loved how calm and peaceful this property was and how well located it was for climbing Sigirya. The chef also cooked me the most amazing curry and rice with dozens of dishes and vegetables I had never tasted before. It is a great option for couples who want to be left alone or families who want a two bedroom accommodation and have restless kids who want to explore.
