Year round destination. Because the Hill Country it so high up it rarely gets unbearably hot. The months of December to April are probably the best time to visit, as temperatures rise to around 28C during the day but cool down at night. During the monsoon season from October to December you can expect heavy downpours. June to September are the driest months here, when there’s almost no rain at all.

Originally owned by a Kandyan family, the Stone House was fully refurbished in 2014 by its new owners and is now a five-bedroom boutique villa offering luxurious accommodation, a private setting and a personalised service.
Stone House is a five-bedroom boutique villa designed with a stone façade set in terraced gardens and with mountain views. It is located on a hillock in Nittawala, a residential suburb of Kandy so offers a lovely peaceful setting but is also in close proximity to Kandy town, a mere 15-minute drive to the Temple of the Tooth.
The owners of Stone House have their own rice mill, and this is the design theme of the hotel. Pictures by local artists display vistas of paddy fields, and there are rice bags and ploughing equipment in frames on the walls. Antique-style furniture gives the rooms a comfortable feel and the addition of knick knacks, candles and vases help to make guests feel more like they are in a house rather than a hotel.
International cuisine is served in the dining room or in the gardens, including traditional Sri Lankan food prepared with rice from the owner’s private rice mills. If you would like to try your hand at Sri Lankan cooking, why not have a lesson with the chef who will be happy to share some tips and tricks.
A lovely infinity pool offers a peaceful place to relax, and the large garden is a nice environment for an evening stroll or refreshing beverage. Spa treatments can be arranged, and there are also mountain bikes available for exploring the city.
There are three Standard Rooms and two spacious Suites with garden and mountain views. Room interiors are tastefully furnished with king-size beds and antique-style furniture.
In-room facilities include a/c, overhead fan, 32 inch LED TV with satellite channels and blue-ray player; mini-bar, tea/coffee facility, and complimentary snacks which includes traditional sweets, spicy nuts & chips; safety locker, 24 hr room service, and baby cot on request. En-suite bathrooms have hot water showers and both suites have bath tubs.
Located on the ground floor, and tastefully furnished with king-sized beds. En-suite shower room.
Junior Suite has additional facilities including 47 inch LED TV, BOSE sound system and en-suite bathroom with twin vanities, bath tub and h/w shower. This suite is located on the first floor and is furnished with a king-size four-poster bed.
Located on the First floor, the Executive Suite consists of a bedroom, sitting area and en-suite bathroom with twin vanities and bath tub with Jacuzzi. In addition to the standard facilities, the Executive Suite has a 47 inch LED TV; BOSE sound system and iPod dock; and complimentary mini-bar and bottle of wine. An additional single bed can be accommodated.
To the back of the hotel there is an infinity pool and stone deck with sun loungers. Spa treatments can be arranged on request and mountain bikes are available for venturing into the city.
Stone House is only a short drive away from the Temple of the Tooth and further afield, guests can visit the impressive Botanical Gardens.
Lucy Black (Staff)
Stone House is a nice little boutique hotel, ideally located for visiting the Temple of the Tooth in the centre of Kandy.
The rooms are comfortable and have their own unique style. The owners have their own rice mill and so this plays a large part in the decor of the hotel, with local art work displaying views of paddy fields and quirky features like framed rice sacks on the wall.
The rooms are a little on the small side, and so I would recommend going for the Junior Suite as this offers a bit more space. None of the rooms have outside terraces or balconies, but the hotel does have a large garden, pool area and veranda to enjoy.
