Best time to Visit

Good time to visit

Average time to visit

Year round destination. Because the Hill Country it so high up it rarely gets unbearably hot. The months of December to April are probably the best time to visit, as temperatures rise to around 28C during the day but cool down at night. During the monsoon season from October to December you can expect heavy downpours. June to September are the driest months here, when there’s almost no rain at all.

From its hilltop position, Elephant Stables boasts breathtaking views over Kandy and the Knuckles mountain range. This ancestral home turned boutique hotel offers guests a tranquil stay from which they can explore Kandy's cultural heritage.

Elephant stables was originally the wallawwa (ancestral home) of a Ceylonese nobleman, gaining it's name from the family elephants that grazed in the gardens.

There are five bedrooms located in the main house, and a separate garden cottage suite. All of the 6 rooms are fitted with the amenities of modern luxury living and give a flavour of the region due to the blend of authentic Sri Lankan artefacts and contemporary design used in the decoration. Elephant Stables has also just introduced a Royal Luxury Tent in the style of the famous Aman-i-Khas tents in India.

Being just 15-minutes from the centre of Kandy, and within close distance of some of Sri Lanka's most famous heritage sites, Elephant Stables is perfectly located to explore the rich history and culture of the hill country. Alternatively, for those relaxation days and evenings, you can chill out by the fire in the living room, take a dip in the infinity pool or explore the landscaped gardens surrounding the house.

Elephant Stables is a lovely option if you are looking to spend a few nights in Kandy. It's located just 10 minutes (up to 25 in bad traffic) from Kandy's main sights and boasts lovely gardens with a great view over the rolling hills. The pool also benefits from these views and it's a great place to relax after a long day on your feet. One of the best things about the hotel is the rooms, they are beautifully designed and have lots of natural light. I stayed in the Pepper Deluxe Garden Room which I'd recommend - it's on the end, with a large balcony and although the room is not huge, you do certainly feel very comfortable in there. I'd definitely return and look forward to heading back.

Elephant Stables is a wonderful boutique property perched on the hilltop above Kandy. It was an old family house and still retains, to this day, a very homely feel. The name comes from the elephants that belonged to the owners whilst they lived there. I particularly liked the outside dining area which has stunning views over Kandy and the two rooms in the old part of the house with lovely veranda's to enjoy the view on.
