The Winelands are a wonderful year-round destination and enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, somewhat like the South of France, which is what makes the area perfect for grape-growing. Summer in Franschhoek is the reverse of the Northern hemisphere. The best season visit is September to March when it is hot, sunny and dry. From April to August it cools down with some rain.

We had no idea what to expect as we arrived at this fabulous little spot in the Winelands. La Cle de Montagne is a collection of four houses on the outskirts of Franschhoek, yet still close enough to reach the town very easily. And what amazing houses they are! Each designed wonderfully and eclectically, choose from Gallery with its dark grey walls, incredible artwork and quirky design (leopard print chairs! Never thought we would love these but we did!). We both loved the Manor, a beautiful open plan house with a gigantic fireplace in the centre a very gentle, old-fashioned farmhouse with two enormous bedrooms with thick carpets and a real feel of luxury. You got the impression that you could batten down the hatches and hibernate here quite happily. The houses each have their own pool and work totally independently of each other or can be booked as a team for a large group or family travelling. No detail has been overlooked each house comes with a state of the art kitchen and your own private butler who can be as unobtrusive or attentive as you need him to be. La Cle is a total joy, four utterly beautiful and individual houses set in a beautiful location in this glorious corner of South Africa.
Boschendal Estate is one of the oldest wine producers in the New World, incorporating French viticulture heritage. This is also the site of the original Cape Dutch Manor House, with history dating as early as 1685.
