There is no bad time to go on safari in the Kruger National Park. The experience does, however, change from month to month. In the summer months (October to March), it gets very hot. The verdant vistas are all the more spectacular because of the rains, but this means that the foliage is denser, water is more abundant and game is therefore trickier to see. There are lots of beautiful migratory birds during the summer months. While the daytime temperature in the winter months (May to September) is ideal, it does get a little chilly at night and in the early morning.

We absolutely loved Leadwood when we visited its a super little lodge with an incredible position overlooking the sand river. Everything about this lodge shouts quality we were shown into the sunken lounge with its enormously high ceilings and of course the amazing view. Above is every adults childhood fantasy a treehouse style deck set high in the branches of towering jackalberry (ebony) trees and enjoying not only great views but a lovely breeze, very refreshing in the heat of the day. There is also a great swimming pool, just long enough for laps but much better for cooling off in the heat of the day mirrored walls give a feeling of space and breakfasts are often served here. The rooms are reached by simple brick pathways and each is fabulously luxurious with a private deck and plunge pool and wonderful industrial style bathtub. Utterly perfect for those wishing for a good amount of luxury in the bush this camp has it in spades!

Leadwood feels like the cooler younger sister to Exeter River Lodge which is &Beyonds other excellent property on the Sand River. Its very intimate with only four sleek and modern rooms. Each one with a private plunge pool and floor to ceiling windows giving the best possible game viewing of the river below. The main building in the lodge is open air and equally modern in feel with lots of slate and dark wood. Leadwood would be perfect for a large family or group of friends to take in its entirety as with just the four rooms they can offer an incredibly private and exclusive safari experience.
This area of the Sabi Sands has one of the largest populations of leopards in the Kruger and is a major selling point for Leadwood and Exeter River Lodge. We spent our afternoon with a large male and mother and cub before having sundowners to the sound of a separate pair calling to each other across the river. just incredible game viewing.

The Safari at Leadwood was exceptional and totally amazing from start to finish. The staff at the lodge could not do more to make our stay special and we appreciated the little touches from Scott Dunn too.
