Cleopatra’s Mountain House is a haven for nature and food lovers, bordering the Giant’s Castle Nature Reserve in the Drakensberg. Each original room overlooks the private dam and breathtaking mountains and confirms in one the need to get away from it all!

The house is nestled in a valley, surrounded by rolling hills and deep gullies – boasting activities ranging from trout fishing, hiking and birding to horse riding and swimming. Cleopatra's Mountain Farmhouse is a haven for those looking for a memorable break from fast-paced life and a chance to explore South Africa's mountain kingdom.

Accommodation is in luxury en-suite bedrooms, all individually decorated in the unusual and slightly wacky style epitomised in the main house.

Your hosts, Richard and Mouse Poynton, having travelled extensively with renowned chefs worldwide, returned home to develop the family farm into their vision of a dream hotel. They will welcome you, warmly and personally, to their eclectic and quirky gourmet getaway in the mist.

Cleopatra offers just 11 individually crafted rooms. All are en-suite and intriguing in their details. The eclecticism of the main lodge is echoed in the guest bedrooms, each taking inspiration from location and family history in its interiors. The sense of history and continuity extends beyond the Victorian teacups, varied quirky family artefacts and vintage seed packets...the original stone farmhouse, built in the early 1900s, now forms rooms 7, 8 and 9.

Richard makes no secret that his long term obsession centres on 'reduction techniques', you see his speciality is sauces! His passion and commitment to cuisine is at the heart of any stay at Cleopatra's.

Seven course dinners at Cleopatra are fun-filled gourmet affairs. Before dinner, Richard talks all the guests through the coming meal, adding a couple of his hilarious stories for good measure. Focus is on freshness, a wonderful selection of herbs and vegetables are picked moments before serving from the garden, combined with top quality ingredients, sourced both locally and internationally.

Richard and Mouse have an extensive collection of beautiful South African wines in their underground cellar. Meals are paired perfectly with Richard's selection, but guests are always welcome to choose from one of the many tempting bottles on offer.

If you have space after the previous nights feasting, the three course breakfast is not to be missed. For those staying for longer, a great way to get the most out of your day is to ask for a picnic. This is carefully prepared, and what better way to enjoy it than high in the Drakensberg or during a break from fishing on one of the crystal clear rivers.

Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse is hidden away in the Kamberg Valley, close to Giant's Causeway Nature Reserve. The Farmhouse is set on 500 acres of rolling hills dotted with walking trails to enjoy.

Further afield, the Highmoor Nature Reserve is a 10 minute drive away. Game in the reserve includes Eland, Reedbuch, Oribi, Jackal, Serval and a huge diversity of birdlife and flora. Set up on Highmoor are three large dams stocked with rainbow trout.

Fishing is available all year round, rivers are stocked with brown trout and the dams are stocked with rainbow trout. Rods are available to hire from the Lodge.

Horse riding for all levels of ability is also available close to Cleopatra's. This is a wonderful way to explore the Drakensberg.

For those after more of an adventure, helicopter flights can be arranged, picking guests up from the garden and whisking them up into the mountains to find a suitable landing spot to stop for a glass of sparkling wine.

Trips to the highest passes and to explore 3000 year old bushman art are also available in the area.
