Alice Woodford (Staff)

Arriving at Hacienda Temozon, I was met by a gentlemen carrying a tray full of ice cold Jugo Verde (Green Juice) and Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus Water) and another with many cool, scented towels, an absolute treat in the humidity of Mexico. This Hacienda is a remarkable place, steeped in history and character with handsome rooms furnished to a high spec and an array of relaxing and cultured activities to cater for all. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here, albeit short, the staff (all from the local town) were wonderful and the food superb. In each room there is a basket containing useful items you might need during your stay, such as mosquito repellent, a thoughtful touch. When the ladies arrived to turn down my room for the night they left me a chocolate treat and a hammock across my room!

Looking down at the shimmering swimming pool - with its four pillars towering pointlessly but beautifully over the water - it's hard to think that barely a century ago Hacienda Temozon was the Yucatan Peninsula's most active plantation, producing hundreds of tonnes of henequen fibre for rope-making. What were once key areas of the hacienda's mini-society (the pharmacy, schoolhouse, workers' sleeping quarters, etc) have been reinvented - in a luxuriously regal fashion - as boutique hotel bedrooms and suites. Grandly proportioned, with 18-foot ceilings, 10-foot wooden double-doors, and sprawling iron beds, the rooms also feature soft, coloured-cotton hammocks as an authentic Mayan alternative to mattress-based snoozing. Despite the stylish renaissance, aspects of the region's rustic roots remain: a donkey-drawn truk takes you around the grounds, across orange fields and to cenotes, the natural rainwater reservoirs in underground caverns that pepper the peninsula. The hotel has built workshops on-site to support the community, and you can see furniture, textiles and other artisan materials being assembled - a flashback to the hacienda's industrious heyday.
